TRX2.5 TMaxx Question
A lil while back I picked up a older TMaxx with the 2.5 Engine.
It would take a few tries to start up, but it would start up.. (EZ Start)
In February I wanted to play with it, it wouldn't drive for me.
I swapped out the glow plugs, but would only stumble/stutter..
Yesterday I wanted to play with it again, couldn't get anything.
Can some1 tell me how many "Turns Out" to set the Idle screw
at? I want this to atleast start up for me. I can work with it from
that point. If I cant get it to fire up, I will put it back on the shelf.
Thanx,
Rob

High speed needle. 4 turns out (I think) low doped needle. The screw should be flush with the inner housing. Try the hsn at 4 turns but it might be 8. Can't remember. Lol. If it doesn't start get back to me. Hold your finger over the exhaust and pres the starter button 3 times. Make small bursts. When you start to hear the engine wanting to fire up try holding the throttle 1-/4

There is no set amount of turns out for the idle screw, set the idle gap at about 1mm or the width of a small paper clip. Sometimes it will need to be opened more depending on how rich the low end is. The high end is set to 4 turns out from the factory, and the low end is set flush with the metal body it sits in. Those settings are really rich though and the truck should be tuned after it's running for sure. Lean it little by little at the high end and low end until it idles smoothly and doesn't spit excess fuel. The easiest trick for the low end is the pinch test. Pinch the fuel line by the carb while the truck is idling and warmed up for a minute or so. If it revs slightly and dies, it's good, if it revs really high and dies it's too rich, if it doesn't rev and just dies it's too lean. This method will get the low end very close to optimal setting, but takes a little practice to master. It doesn't have to be changed a whole lot from flush most times, so lean it in small increments, 1/8 turns in at a time at the most. After that the high end can be tuned by stabbing the gas from about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle to full and letting it rev out to full speed, a rolling start basically. You should see a nice cloud of blue smoke with smooth acceleration and when you let off the deceleration should be smooth as well, no sputtering or erratic RPM changes. Try not to use the brakes during this test, just let the truck decelerate with the throttle at 0. I usually try and set my high end a hair richer after I have it running well. To test the tune as a whole after setting the individual needles, let the truck idle sitting still for 10-15 seconds, then stab the gas to full throttle. It should accelerate smoothly and climb to it's max speed, then when you let off the gas it should decelerate smoothly back down to idle and when stopped should be able to sit and idle for at least 15 seconds. If it passes the last test, you have a very well tuned engine Usually once it's dialed in the only needle you really need to change is the high end when the temperature outside changes drastically.
If you have an glow igniter on hand, you could try using that with the EZ Start glow wire off to test if the wire is an issue. Those can have issues igniting the plug sometimes. I always ditched mine for pull start or a roto start, had nothing but issues with the EZ Starts I've had. Good luck, hopefully she'll be a good girl and run for you!
