Default fei bao panther "what engine is best"

I have a wren 100 on order and I was wondering if it would power a fei bao panther most of the ones I have seen have 120 or 160 size engines in them, what has anyone else got in thiers?

I have had a wren 160 Wren 120 and Jetcat P80 in the airframe. The P80 is the 22lb thrust version, it flew the plane but with little to power to spare. The 160 was obviously the best and you could throttle back. I think the 120 or 140 size engines are probably the best fit. The problem is the plane comes out a bit heavy. There's plenty of wing so once your going it's fine, but the little extra sure is nice.

I have one on my bench and size wise a 100 looks perfect for this jet. I'm told the older version is quite heavy but the newer version is considerably lighter. The factory fuel supply is 175oz in 3tanks which is a lot for this size jet. I'm eliminating one of the tanks and reducing the fuel supply to 133oz. That will be plenty for my 120se motor.

I called the uk agent for FB and he has also had one of the older kits with a p80 in it and it flew well. I was hoping that with a light weight install and leaving out one of the tanks it would come out about 30lb the kit weight is 18 lb can anyone confirm this?

The plane builds tail heavy so going with a 100 size motor would also save nose ballast

It will fly Scale on 22 lbs., the full sized Panther was not over powered. with only 5000 lbs of thrust. I fly mine with a Wren SS with only 15.5 lbs at 25 Lbs in my PST Panther.

why has your super sport only got 15.5 lb and not 18?

That is 15.5 measured in the aircraft, with a scale, setting on the wheels with thrust tube losses, not on a bench. Also my engine was only advertised at 17 when new in 2005. My Wren K100 is advertised at 22 and puts out 24.5 on the bench.

Mine came out at 26lbs dry with only the one (big) tank used, and the Merlin 100 is perfect power for it. Best jet I've owned...have a look at it here...

Do you use the the body flaps for landings. I didn't notice them deployed just the speed brakes.
Thx Vin...

No mate...not needed. With outboard flaps at T/O, speed-bakes out and U/C down, I'm on about 3/4 throttle to maintain airspeed.

Cheers,

Dick

I've got the first gen two-part fuselage version, powered with a JetCat Titan (P-160SE). My all-up weight is just over 40lbs and the turbine produces just over 31lbs of thrust at ~1000' ASL.

I think this is a great thrust-to-drag balance, that produces respectable vertical maneuvers, without being over-powered.

I've been flying this configuration since 2008.

Incidentally, the Panther is very enjoyable to fly and was my first turbine jet; no regrets, here!

Thanks Dick I'm thinking I'll just tack them shut and activate the speed brakes only.

To be scale the speed/Dive brakes were not used in landings, they were used in dives only to keep the speeds below the point the elevators were not effective, "Compressibility" Ala P-38 Lightnings of WW2.

Hi Vincent

I use the body flaps, they give a lot of drag so you can bring it in at a higher throttle setting. Also I found that about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch of crow really helps on landing and take off, it makes it more forgiving. You can see how much I use in the pictures.

I don't think there is any washout in the wing at all so If you get too aggressive on the elevator at low speed it can bite a bit, easy to recover just can be a bit hairy low.

Its pretty gusty where we fly so I may see a bit more of the bad behavior due to that. Also the crow made it much easier to land without bouncing it down the runway.

Sorry used the video stabilization from youtube so it might look a bit funny.

I have the older model and it's quite heavy, 38lbs wet, and I have a Jet Cat P120sx in It, I really like the way it flies, but I have to put an gyro in the ailerons, because the plane was unstable at the roll axis.

Aero65,

I'll see if I can 'tame' my Panther a bit, by adding some crow; it bites similarly!
Thanks for the tip!

Hi Vincent

I use Flaps and body flaps, I used the brakes a few times on landing, it was too much I would slow down to fast and drop on the nose more often.
I have the one piece fuse frm Global it has been a great airplane, very tough. I know I beat the stuffing out of it till I put crow in lol.

Ill check the CG this weekend, I might be a little nose heavy. Also using a gyro on just the rudder, it very stable but when its gusty (always) I had lots of Dutch roll and it looked very bouncy in the sky.

Joe, crow made it much easier to fly low speeds. Let me know how it works for you. Normally crow is not needed for take off but a couple of times I was heading for the edge of the runway and had to yank it off and was treated to 90 degrees at 10 feet lol was not fun, bad steering I know, so I just put it on just incase on take off too. Luckily the plane is pretty forgiving and I was able to fly it out of that situation before cartwheeling it.

We use to fly the feibo f9-f with evo 140, most of the time 1/2 to 2/3 throttle .Its the one part body & it weight 13.8 kg dray.
No crow need it slow very good with the wing flaps.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if any of you ran a bypass on your engine. I am having problems with gear door being blown open while at low throttles. I have the older fei bao panther with a King tech 160.
