Turbine Waiver for Experienced Foreign Pilot
I am currently living in the USA and there is a possibility that my contract might be extended. I am thinking of shipping one or 2 of my models across from the UK but will need a turbine waiver.
Does anyone know how this would work in practise? I have 100s of turbine flights but nothing logged as that isn’t a UK requirement. Will I need to log 50 high-performance flights (which will require me to buy another model)? Will I need to buddy box or just carry out the qualification flight? What about the 5 ‘supervised’ solos after the qualification flight?
I have asked the AMA but, so far, they have only confirmed that I will need a waiver.

I would go this way to comply with the AMA/insurance.
Become a AMA member first, then have an experienced turbine pilot to observe a practice flight, if he is happy with your flight ( he will be ) then get the application done, then have a CD with a turbine waiver observe your qualification flight, then you are done.
You have all the practice flights that you need, this is only if requested.
For confirmation purposes, the pilot is required to keep a written log of all flights and will provide
copies to AMA upon request.
If they ask then, you will.

Thanks for the info. I’m just getting my ducks in a row at the moment and it will be a while before I can get a model over here (and a vehicle to transport them in!).
Ideally I would stick to my smaller jets but I’ll need something heavier to get my waiver so I might need to look at getting my Avanti shipped over as well, which will be a pain but will save me having to buy another model.

Hey sic I think you contacted me about the x45, the Texas guys are a great group of guys! They can help you with the waiver for sure. I’m moving in two weeks or would help, good luck if you can make it to Kentucky Jets come say hello!

I’m in San Antonio at the moment but if I stay in the US I’ll be in Wichita Falls.
I’ve heard back from the AMA again and I’m disappointed to say they weren’t much help. Despite asking very specific questions I was simply told that I need to get a waiver. They offered no advice or guidance on how to do it, and didn’t answer my questions, so I will have to rely on local experts if/when the time comes.

1: We could set something up here in Austin for a test flight. About 80 miles north of SA.
2: Do it in Waco TX for sure. About 180 miles north of SA.
3: If you will be in Wichita Falls, it could be done in the Ft. Worth area. About 120 miles S of Wichita Falls.
I am a turbine waivered CD and would be willing to help with the process and can get another waiver holder to help with the sign off.
Also the Greater Southwest Jet Rally will be held in Waco Sept.5-7
But the first thing you need to do is join the AMA
If I can help in anyway PM me your number.
In all 3 options, I can be available to do it.

Out of interest, what happens when European pilots go to fly at the shows in the US then - do they get waivers before they can do their demo flights ?

"Since the majority of foreign contestants attending AMA sanction events would find it difficult to comply with the requirements of obtaining a special turbine waiver, the AMA Executive Council has approved the following provision effective January 1, 1997: “AMA will accept a letter from the National Aero Club stating that the pilot is qualified and experienced in operating a model powered by a turbine engine.” While foreign contestants don’t have to obtain a special turbine waiver they are still required to comply with the AMA Gas Turbine Program, except for item 23. Any AMA member who resides in the United States and operates a turbine engine is required to obtain a waiver."
