Default Trying to Learn....need advice.

I have an electric Corona. It is my first ever heli. Never flown a heli before. I have a Futaba gyro and a copilot.
I have done nothing more than hover about 6 feet up, and move around just a little, and I mean a little. No crashes yet.
But........how do you guys learn to maintain altitude. I either am going up or down as soon as I try to move in any direction. Is there some kind of trick to this, or is it just more practice........
I wish they had an altitude hold.....I'd buy that too.
Any answer appreciated
Dick

Dick,

Does your radio have a "heli" mode? Although it's not actually necessary to use this for flying a Corona if you do then you'd be able to define a throttle curve so instead of having a completely linear response between the throttle stick and the ESC control you could flatten the curve a bit in the middle so that the stick is "dampened" a bit around the hovering point. It could help. (Also open the back of the Tx and if it's an aircraft radio with a strong ratchet on the throttle control then take the little metal springy bit off and turn it over then screw back in place. This'll keep some tesnsion on the throttle position but it won't "click" from one position to the other making it a bit smoother.

It takes practice. A fixed pitch heli will lag in collective response since they use rotor rpm for the collective phase of flight. You will learn to lead or lag the throttle when maneuvering though lots of practice. A Corona is a great choice in a first heli. They are simple and take the most abuse with little or no damage. Electric fixed pitch helis are easier for fly than glow powered fixed pitch helis. Electric motors are faster responding than internal combustion engines.(glow) The first rc model helicopters were fixed pitch. Also when a heli is hovering they create their own turbulance. Especially when they are only a few feet above the ground. Once you get the hovering down the rest is easier.
I hope this helps a little.

Cheers,

Shannon
