Default Installing former is expoxy glass

What is the best procedure for installing Formers. I know that aeropoxy is the best adhesive for the job and I have already purchased from BVM. So is glueing in the former with CA and then applying a fillet of aeropoxy on either side sufficient or should I just tack the former in with CA and work the Aeropoxy into the joint itself and apply a fillet also?

Thanks in advance for any help

Shawn

After sanding the former location with 80 grit, cleaning the surface with alcohol or laquer thinner, just spot tack the former in place with a couple of "dots" of thick CA to hold it in position, and then apply the aeropoxy to the periphery. Be sure to fillet the frame or former from both sides. You don't need a large fillet. I use a Q-Tip to make the fillet with. That seems to make the right radius.

Clean up any excess aeropoxy with laquer thinner, and wait for it to cure.

Good luck................................

Hi Harley. So would you sand the area first then clean the surface with denatured alcohol then glue or clean the area first then sand with 80 grit then glue?

Thanks in advance

Sand, clean, glue.

Sanding after cleaning would defeat the purpose of cleaning.

Sand, clean, glue.

I always add a fourth step first- Clean-sand-clean-glue. This is in case there are any impurities from handeling the part (mold release, hand oils, etc) on the surfact. If you sand first all you do is grind the impurities into the glass. It doesnt really take any longer and makes me feel just a wee bit better!. Scott

In addition to all the above, I add a bit of glass cloth/resin to the formers that will be under a lot of stress (like the former that will hold the Ducted Fan Unit/Engine, or a landing gear). I cut the cloth (usually 1 oz. weight cloth) into 1 inch squares (approximately). I position them on the fillet so that appx 1/2 inch of it will be on the former and 1/2 inch of it will be on the fuselage. I sort of just paint them on using thinned epoxy. Bob
