Looking for a good 27% for first gasser
Guys,
I'm looking for a kit in the 75" to 80" range to be my first gasser. Something in the scale aerobat family. I'm leaning towards an Edge 540, but am open to any others that fly well. I'd also like it to have 3D ability.
I've built about 4 kits, and scratched one that came out okay, so I'd say my building skills are pretty good. I would like to build it as a kit, as opposed to getting an ARF.
Please help me, I'd hate to go wrong on my first gasser.
Thanks,
Steve

I've got a 29% Aeroworks Edge. I think its hard to beat this plane in this size range. The kit is a relatively easy build and goes together pretty quick. It has good power with 40 - 50cc engines.
Here are a couple of pictures of mine.

I agree with augiep38 I have a 29% Aeroworks Edge flies great, very predictable, kit had good instructions goes together fairly quick, I have Brison 3.2 in it. great combo. A member in our club has the Midwest Extra with about 80" span it looks great in the air also.

I am soon going to be working on an Aerowork 33% Edge, afterwords I will be purchasing their 29% Edge. It is a fantastic kit. Fairly inexpensive for a gasser and very aerobatic. You can not go wrong.

I've always liked the Aeroworks Edge. What I did though was get a Midwest Extra300, as it was a few hundred cheaper. I found the kit for $200 from someone that bought it and never built it. I do think the Aeroworks would go together much quicker with foam-core wing. Another advantage to the Edge is it's 2 piece wing. That's a nice feature too.
Now, if your a builder, and want a bit of challenge, and save some bucks, go for the Midwest 27%'ers, the Cap, or Extra. Be ready to do some work though, there's alot of wood there.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I may just go with one of the Midwest kits. The AeroWorks planes look great, but are a little more than I want to spend for my first gasser. Anyone have an opinion about the D&L Designs 80" Edge?
Thanks again, my decisions are getting easier.

I had a Midwest Cap232 with a Quadra 52 and it was great. Not extreemly overpowered but a ton of fun. I'm having another one built as we speak and am using the same motor. A friend has a Midwest Extra300 with a G62 - WoW ( I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my Midwest Extra 300XS). You won't be disappointed with the Midwest Kits, they are neally nice and easy to build.

Midwest CAP
Lew,
I have heard that a lot of Caps will snap out on hard elevator input. Does that seem to be the case with your Midwest? That's the one thing that makes me a little gun-shy about getting a Cap.

MW Kits
OK I have had almost every Midwest kit. I built 7 of the G-202's, 4 Extra 300s, and 4 of the Cap232's. The first Extra that I did was finished in two weeks. No I do not build full time but I did put in some long hours. I think having one of these done in a 4-6 week period is very reasonable. As far as having a lot of wood in the kit. I think they build very easy and straight. I am currently flying a MW Extra 300 with a Moki. Flying weight is 11.5lbs. With the Moki running so rich it looks like it has smoke it will pull the plane vertical at half throttle. I think if built light a Brison 2.4 or a ZDZ40 would be a perfect choice. If you put something like a
G-62 on it you are asking for trouble as you are going to bring the weight way up and it will not fly as well. Remember to keep it as light as possible. If you want some weight tips just shoot me an email.

i dunno how you guys feel about laniers.... but i have the Cap 232 ARF and i love the way it flies! it doesnt snap on full elevaitor input if you ease into it the other day i was doing harriers for the first time and this plane was sooooo easy to do it with i have a Fox 3.2 in mine for power (gas engine by the way) and its plenty but im at sea level if you are higher up i would go with a ZDZ 60 im planning on getting a ZDZ 60 soon anyways just cuz i want more power hehe anyways the Lanier Cap can normally be found for like $200 i think its a 2 piece wing and its foam cores and the stab is foam i believe to anyways they may not build very well i dunno but i love the way my cap flies!! well good luck!!

Carden?
Since you said you wanted to build, have you given carden aircraft a look? I know a few people that have built thier planes and are very pleased. They make a small 27% extra......Dave

Finally decided...let's hope it works out
Thanks for all of the good input. I decided on the 29% Aeroworks Edge, in the builder's kit form. Just ordered it today, in fact. I have no real experience with foam, so this will be a learning experience to say the least.
Now all I have to do is decide on an engine. I'm thinking I might be able to wait for the DA-50.
Any gotchas during the build of the 29%er?
Thanks again,
Steve

29% Aeroworks Edge
I friend flew his 29% Aeroworks Edge last weekend with a ZDZ 60 up front and it was awsome! This combination seems perfect from what I saw on his first flight.

Bruce Lund's Staudacher
This is a great model and probably the only one offered in correct scale including the airfoil. Plans are available from Bruce and all parts can be purchased. A super looking and great flying model at 80.5".

AW 29% Edge
I'm currently building one, and so far it has gone together very easily. Fuse is framed up, empennage sheeted, starting to sheet the wings now. Very nice kit. I already have a 3w 42i, so that's what I'm gonna use. I'd rather have a 50, but I think the 42 should be sufficient. I saw the new DA 50 at Toledo and it was GOREGOUS! It would be perfect. (or a 3w 50, if you can't wait ) Good luck, and be sure and keep us posted on your progress!
Here's my dad w/the fuse:
