Default Engines, engines, engines?

Ive just recieved A giant GP extra kit! After alot of research still I come here to ask all my flying buddies what and where the hell to buy, and why? Ive comprised a list of all the manf., I could find and at this point just a vote and a note, would be helpful! I'll purchase the motor when I get close to completing the fuse, hopefully 4-5 weeks. My dillema is there are so many to pick from? I have spent time on the phone with rc showcase and they are saying go with the zdz80 available in a week with ignition, 26 x 8 msc prop, pitts muffler for $805.00 plus shipping, help me out, your friend the Jumbo Jet.

more engines I didnt list on the vote are, fox=old school, zenoah= to heavy, m and r= where are they?, tartan=clone, d and b= seems to much $,

Depends on your flying style......If you are a SUNDAY flier or IMAC, ZDZ80 might be OK, but if you like to 3D, then you will need 100cc.....but then again the 1/3 scale GP Extra isn't a 3D monster (that's not to say it won't)

personally, I would go with a DA or BME100cc class engine

The sleeper that I am suprised you mentioned is the D&B. They are not a well known--(small company-- pretty much a one man operation) . They are sort of heavy by todays standards-- but they are the smoothest running and very durable-- you can not wear it out. For my money-- if cost is NEVER A FACTOR-- the finest engines for a single would be Taurus and for a twin is D&B.

D&B as I said is a small company-- they do not advertise hardly at all-- they have no marketing and I get the idea they like it that way. Their engines are the proverbial "brick outhouse"-- very solid, better described as "overbuilt" If you want to know how good the engines are-- try to find one on the used market--there are none. Ken Baker (as does Bill O at Taurus) is a perfectionest of the highest order. If you are worried about customer service, I will say this--I have owned a 3 D&B 3.7s and I have always bought used. Before I bought my first, I called Ken and we talked a bit--my nickel--his time- and he knew he wasw not selling anything to me as I was checking the history of an engine sent back to him for service. The engines I have sent back for service he has repaired and charged me only parts and shipping--- AND I DID NOT BUY IT NEW FROM HIM! Two quality compaines I enjoy dealing with are D&B and Taurus.

Bruce,

You forgot to mention the Cox .049!

The ZDZ80 -on a decently built GP Extra -will do anything you want -
this ain't speculation -a friend locally, has two of em .
Hardly "sport models" - That 80 is still a" best buy" in a "100 " class.
(A 100 class engine is anything that fits in one hand now .)
I also used the 80 in a few Unlimited class designs and they were as well powered in the "power to weight " dep't as any Unlimited models I have seen .
Having said that - I am putting my ZDZNG 100 in a new H9 330 - the new "lighter version"
Because I needed more power?
Nope - Just for the hell of it.
After all - It's all for fun -

I am currently building the same airplane.
After some thought and research I concluded that the best engine is a DA100.
With some reinforcement in the very light construction I am sure the airframe will hold it very well and I am expecting a very interesting power to weight ratio.
I february I will tell you how it flys.
Ciao

By now you've probably made your choice... I've used the Fox gassers on 5 of my planes now. Three 4.2's... and two 2.4's... They are awesome. Get stronger each season. Start unbelievably eay..... If you have a choice...... check them out.

As a GP Giant Extra owner, I'd go with the ZDZ80 Single. I flew mine for ~75 flights with a Quadra 75 and at 22 lbs. dry (with that 6.8 lb. motor!), it 3D'ed just fine - including TR/hovering. That said, I didn't have unlimited vertical by any means.

I sold the Quadra to buy a ZDZ80, since I have a ZDZ80 in my two-pound heavier H9 Sukhoi and it has solid vertical.

Also, the GP Giant Extra design just begs for a pipe/cannister setup - on which the ZDZ80 is apparently amazing...as well as light & inexpensive.

Good luck!

I have one with a FPE 5.8, runs great and the cost is reasonable. Not only that the plane balanced perfect (95 oz. with muffler & ignition) . Vertical hover at 1/2 throttle. There sold by Sig Mfg and Chief Aircraft.

The Brison 5.8 is also a good cost effective choice. Have one in my GSP.com 540. Smooth, powerful and very reliable.
