I'm installing a DA 100 in a 35% Wild Hare Extra soon for IMAC use and I want to know if the in-cowl muffs are just too loud for IMAC. This will be my first year of competing and don't know what to expect in the way of noise reg's from the judges.

And, if cannisters are a must, what is the best setup, considering weight, power, and cost?

I have used the in-cowl mufflers for a couple of years and I don't think they
are that quiet or that loud, kind of down the middle. I too am thinking IMAC this year
so asked around. Like everything else, ask 10 pilots and you get 10 answers running
from way too loud to they work fine if you're careful with prop selection and judicious
use of throttle. I don't have an answer for you but you aren't going to get one anyway.
I said to hell with and bought a set of KS headers and cannisters to go in my new 35%
Carden Edge. I figure I certainly won't need any deductions so why chance it. I can tell
you that I was very impressed with the quality of material and the build quality of the
KS stuff and I can't imagine finding anything better.

I got the slimline smoke mufflers for my DA100.
A bit more restrictive than the standard DA mufflers but more
quiet. The combo along with a 27x10 msc prop got me 'quiet' scores
in 2 out of the 3 Imac contests last year. On the 3rd contest the db
meter showed 97db (96 is the current limit) at full throttle over wet grass. (pissed me off)
Still got 'quiet' in air scores though.

My point is that you don't need canisters to fly imac with the DA100.

I wish I had seen those before I bought the cannisters. Didn't know they
exsisted. If you've tried them with smoke, how do they work? Best smoke
I've seen so far are the Johnson mufflers for the 3W 100. Thought about
getting him to make a set for my DA but the Slimlines look pretty nice.

I got them directly from slimline. I had to dig in their web site to find the part number and then call them. Makes you wonder about their Marketing Dept.

Anyhow.

I haven't installed the smoke system yet. I was busy practicing the new imac sequences just before the weather turned bad over here. I guess now I have all the time of the world to install it.

I was under the impression though that the smoke pump is what makes or breaks a smoke system. Slimline's idea of the heated coil on the side of the muffler seems excellent in theory but I have seen other mufflers produce smoke just as well.
When I made the choice to go with the slimline mufflers I was going primarily for the quietness and got the smoke option for the fun and games part of Imac ;-)

I couldn't tell you. This is my first DA and I never had the standard mufflers to compare with.
From what I saw in pictures though it seems to me that the outlets are of bigger diameter on the standard
mufflers and the cannister area might be bigger for the slimlines.
I might be wrong though cause, like I said, I never had the 2 on my hands to compare.

I can help here. I happen to have both mufflers on hand. The slimline mufflers are actually about 5/16ths of an inch longer, front to back. The extra length will stick out further forward.
The outlet pipe on the slimline is 1" diameter, the DA mufflers outlet pipe is 1-1/8" diameter.
Other than that, they are almost identical dimensions. Here's some pics. The Slimline mufflers are the shiny ones.

That's great pictures and info Jim. Finally some real data to compare the 2.
Have you used the slimlines yet. I see the standard are used but the slimlines are
new. It'll be interesting to have the performace differences between the 2 too.

I haven't run the Slimline mufflers yet. Should get to it in a couple of months. I recently moved and I'm still getting re-organized from the move. I've got a DA 100 going on a Troybuilt 35% Extra 260, and I'll probably see how the mufflers compare on there. I suspect we will loose a little rpm's and noise with the Slimline mufflers, but we'll see. I'll try to remember to post my results on this thread when I get a chance to compare them.
