No whining about the cold !!!
It never fails
Someone had to walk five miles to school, someone else had to walk ten miles, next the same but uphill, then no shoes then windy, then uphill both ways with no shoes, in the wind, blah blah blah.
Well then I will start this one by saying it is too cold to fly !!!
Now who is next ???

I don't think it has ever got that cold here. Maybe -20, and it has not been that cold for a few years. If I wanted to fly on the coldest of days here I could just step out the back door of my shop, and into a heated hanger and fly. Did I mention that these foamies are great. Tom

RE: No whining about the cold !!!
It almost sounds weird that it is 125 degrees warmer down in Florida then Alaska. Not that I live there, but I am moving back down come June!
I always wondered.
Why would anyone ever live like north of like NYC?
Then I asked myself, why would anyone live north of the coldest spot in the US like Minneapolis?
Then I asked myself, why would anyone live in Canada?
Then I asked myself, why would anyone live north of Canada?
Now I am really wondering ... why the heck do you live in Alaska?
Crazy!!!!

I have to agree with STLPilot..... I didn't fly here yesterday because it was in the forties with
with a 20 mph north wind I guess that makes me a wuss.

bummer about the flying conditions Lamcevek. you just have to be a multi-hobby kinda guy. Maybe you can start a snowmobile forum somewhere. how many people can #9 a Ski-Doo. I've been to Anchorage twice, I love it up there. Not sure I could live there though. I think Fairbanks is more extreme than Anchorage anyway.

RE: No whining about the cold !!!
Well I will admit it in that the cold is starting to get to me, so I found another job around the Anchorage are and will be moving late feb.
I just got back from Anchorage last night and I will say that it is always an adventure. It wasn't that cold when we left but it was a might bit chilly. About three hours into our drive these two Carribou came running out in front of our pathfinder and there wasn't a thing I could do, and WHAM I hit one right in the left shoulder, Freaked me out completely. Smashed my car up pretty good and kiled the animal instantly. Now I have been hunting before and this is totaly different in that I felt SOOOO bad for killing this animal. The good news is that I called the State Troopers and they pickup the animal and give the meat to local charities.
Now on the way nack is when it started getting really cold and strange things happen to your vehicle. The steering get very stiff, and the clutch almost impossible to move.
Having said that it is supposed to be +20 by friday.

Do you have 6 months of daylight and 6 months of darkness to contend with too?
One bright spot. Refrigeration and air conditioning cost would be low.

We get in the hundreds for a week or more at a time and it sometimes goes all summer, with maybe a break in the high 90s lol. Oh well, our winters are nice and 40-60 degrees[8D]

RE: No whining about the cold !!!
Why live in the north you ask? I"ve been all over the country/world with the military and I can tell you one thing. I'll never live anywhere else. The country is beautiful, and the people up here aren't winers. What they consider cold as hell in other parts of the country is good motorcycle, or fishing weather up here. Kinda funny, I've been watching the national news shows from the east coast where it has gotten down to close to *GULP* ZERO!!! oooh, act like the rapture is upon us or something. Looks like a pretty dang nice day to me. But that's OK, I'll keep it all to myself....too many people down there anyway. When it's zero degrees here, you can find me torque rolling my twister. If you can find it in you, come on over and join me. I'll take a salty bite of my *****, spit it in your face, do a tail tap on your forehead, and say somethin' about yer momma while you shiver and mutter expletives.
But seriousely, I'm joking around. If you've never been through Canada, or up to Alaska...I think you're missing some of the most beautiful places on earth. (and the fishing is unbelievable) Temperature is a minor thing to concern yourself with, and can be dealt with. Lots of fun to be had in the snow.

[X(] dang -56 is cold ! I don't like flying in any kind of weather below 40 or 50 with a stiff wind.
But my shop is in the garage without air condition or heater, and trust me that working here in Houston on your planes with a 100% humidity and 100 degrees is not very great either. And when it is cold, it is cold in the garage too. Nope, working in the house is not an option according to the boss []

GEEZE!
I'm wussin out at 10 degrees above.
But it's nice when there is no wind, cause glow engines make gobbs of power when it's cold. It's down right painful to set the needle, however. What is the wind chil at 10 degrees behind a 12.25x3.75 APC turning at 14,100 rpm?
I live not far from a lake, and we fly out there, when there aren't huge drifts.

Yeah, that IS cold.
Havn't flown below +20 F. this year. Maybe will fly colder than that Saturday since our club is having their annual winter fly.
