Default Making a building stand

Tried a search but too many related-but-not-related threads so:

Anyone have simple plans for making a construction/building stand? You know what I mean, a half-moon shaped piece of foam or padded ply at each end to support a fuse in progress.

I've got a sheet of left-over blue foam that I'm just itching to cut up so if anyone can help or redirect me to a thread, I'll be eternally grateful.

Try this web site. it has an excellent fuse stand, makes a straight fuse every time. Also, look around on the site, you'll find a wing jig also.

i'm a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. principle. easy to do with foam and a little epoxy. the bottom piece could be moved up a little along the sides (about 1/3 up) to provide better support.

Sorry Voyager,

After reading your post a 2nd time I realized what you were lookin for. I just took a scrap piece of 2X12 about 15 inches long, cut a half moon shape from one side and then cut a V about two inches wide gouing to a point about three inches into the wood. I vahe used this to support my fuse upside down when working in or on the bottom of it.

I cut scrap 1x12 into 3 pieces. Make the cutouts for the cradle with a scroll saw and cover the cradle surface with foam water pipe insulation. Screw the uprights to the base and you're done. I have also seen people take a cheap styrofoam chest and cut the sides down to make a cradle.

ya wild willy, the "support" is what I was lookin for, not a jig. KISS is just what I'm looking for. Thanks for the kick to get the brain working again.

I make small 3/4" PVC stands to work on my models with and also use them to transport to the field. Stacking them helps with storage also.

Is there a "standard" width/length to build the supports? Using it for a 1/8 scale.

just measure where you want the supports to contact the fuse. use your plans as a guide. don't forget to make it tall enough for the fin/rudder to clear the table in case you want to turn fuse upside down but not too tall so that it becomes unstable. make it wide enough for good support (i usually make mine about 12" wide). again, an "i" beam design works best.

Here is what I use. I really like it because of the adjustable pads on the stand. It cost around $14.00 as I remember. It also raises the plane off of the table. Of course, I end up unable to see the table top with all the tools underneath, but I use it for most builds. I have a stronger one for taking to the field, but for the shop this works greatn

I have the Robart Super Stand II - $15 at Tower. I really liked how it solidly supported the model. I'ts light and simple - [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

I liked the supports so well I stole the idea for my field box -

Cheers!

After all the screwing around I did on the box trying to get things the way I wanted them, I reckon I have $45-$50 in it: $25 for the box, $20-$25 for 1/4 inch hardboard, PVC pipe and fittings, hardware, aluminum angle, rubber padding, paint.

Cheers!

Thanks for the pics Jim I have a rolling toolbox and have been struggling on how to do the bottom box with the fuel cannister. I bought the same type you have and it should fit just like yours. Looks like I can start on mine now. Sorry for stealing the idea, but it's a great one.

Thanks - I also installed a mini power panel and fuel pump on the outside -

Ran wires for pump and power panel thru the back of the box to the battery compartment...

Cheers!
