Although I would like to classify myself as an expert, I must agree with Phil. One can never stop learning and gaining more experience. Therefore, I shall clissify myself as inbetween intermediate and expert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: So, when do you YOU consider yourself a expert pilot??
Well, thats a hard one. I've done everything on the list with the exception of being complimented by a club president, and formation turbine flying during a fly-in. I still have my RCU profile listed as an intermediate pilot and don't see changing it in the near future. On the other hand, I know quite a few pilots that haven't dont half the list that I consider ultimate experts. So who knows...
I like G-man-RCU's answer, that when you can total up the cost of a crash and be within $15 of the actual total, then you are indeed an expert. To be pro on the other hand, you need to do this while the plane is on its way to the crash, and not after

Expert ??? Because.......
I instruct??? Landed a Trainer with failed ailerons ??
I dragged the wing tip of my SIG Wonder in the grass, continued flying and not cartwheel it?
I have iced the wings and prop of a Scat Cat and landed it safely to be deiced and flown again for a second icing and safe landing.
I have been asked to do maiden flights?
I have flown 1/4 scale?
I fly turbines??
NOT!!!!
I would consider myself a Student Pilot ......Allways learning

RE: So, when do you YOU consider yourself a expert pilot??
I have never thought of myself as a great pilot, however I was shocked one day at the field when another member of the club asked me to maiden his plane. I did not know what to say, he was concerned about his ability to correct for the torque on takeoff and he thought I could get it trimmed up. Everything went fine but that was the most nervous I have ever been flying a high wing trainer! I can stand in front of a thousand people and play the trumpet but that was something else.

What does "expert" mean in regards to RC flying? And who would care?
I am better than some and not as good as some-
I CAN estimate pretty well the damage cost of an airplane having only heard the impact-

My 2 cents.
When things go wrong and your pulse goes up but you can stay calm and bring the plane home.
When winds or small runways don't phase you.
When other people want you to fly there aircraft.
Take Care

RE: So, when do you YOU consider yourself a expert pilot??
I would venture to say that most pilots dont & wont consider themselves experts.I have only been flying DF jets about 2 years myself & am about to take the plunge into my turbines in the next 2-3 months.I would consider myself a good pilot but I have still have plenty to learn to get where I want to be.I think every pilot has his/her forte'-mine is deadsticking.I have always been able to get them back home safely with a nice smooth landing-thats just my thing. But for me personally when I am flying I block everything else out & I totally get my mind on my plane & thats it.Nothing else goes thru my head at that time-I think alotta guys dont become "one with the plane" 100% when they are flying.I would venture too say that some guys get a little too complacent /comfortable at the sticks & think in their mind that nothing could go wrong cause they got it licked.Thats when it bites you in the ***.I always find myself thinking 3 steps ahead in case something does happen. The reality of it is that most everyone in this hobby never stops learning,we are always moving our way up & learning how to do things a little better/easier.Just my opinion at least

Dunno what the Oxford English says but defined as it's syllables sound:
Expert: Ex = a has-been...spurt = a drip under pressure!

When I can fly a *real* FA-18 and catch the tailhook on an aircraft carrier runway that's only 500 feet long...
Actually I think those guys are beyond expert class.... Maybe "Elite" is a better word in that case.
Ok...now I'm babbling, my point is that I doubt I'll ever consider myself an expert unless I end up flying some sort of full scale plane, and only if I'm doing that for a living.

I think the term "Expert" is a term you apply to others whose abilities you admire and aspire to, and never a term that you apply to yourself.

But on the other hand, compared to the guy that's sitting here in the office next to mine, I'm an amateur.
Anyway, my point is that I think it's ok to sometimes refer to yourself as an expert, just don't let it go to your head.
