Poll : Best "High-Performance" Fun-Fly Engines
Im doing this post because someone recently told me they didnt think a Rossi was a good engine for a profile fun fly.
What is your vote for the overall best engine and why ?
Personally I wouldnt put TT, OS46 FX or Magnum in the "High Performance" category but maybe your opinion is different ?
I'll try to get most engine makes in the list but Im sure I'll leave sumthin out.
Oh well. After you vote tell us why you like that brand of engine.
Will be interesting to me to see what people are using.
Thanks,
John

Do you really have to ask? I haven't seen anything as good as a ys yet! Although I am very happy with my Mvvs 49 after it got broken in. 200 plus flights and only 1 deadstick! Just my thoughts!

Webra 50. Nothing can touch it for power to weight ratio, ease of starting, transition of throttle, and it sounds cool on the stock muffler.

Comp Funfly
In the competition funfly arena, the webra .32 is unmatched for the power:weight. Mine turns a 10-4 props almost 18k for almost 9 pounds of thrust.
All depends what you are looking for I guess, power:weight ratio, RPM, speed, transition, torque. The webra .50 is a good all around IMHO, I don't think I've touched the needle valve on mine in 4 years, running same fuel and prop, but still. YS is good when they are working but when they are not working? they are not working. O.S. is good, reliable, consistent and good power. Just my $.02. I had one MVVS, I will not own another. I own several rossis', another good powerplant, but technology is passing them by(enough of the heavy case already). I currently own a Jett .30 and .35, good motors, we'll see how long they last. Another good-not-so-much-heard-about-engine? HP .40 Gold Cup....power to weight is nuts.

I like the power of the Rossi. Everybody can tell when my friend and I light up our Rossi's. We get all the attention. If you can get your Rossi Fine tuned there is no better motor around.
Thanks

Well I still believe the Rossi offers the most value overall...great for the price. While I havent seen everything out there I must say I havent seen anything as strong as the Webra 50.
Man, what a mule.

Engine comparison
I tend to look at facts in the form of numbers so here they are.
Engine / Weight / Power/ Power to Weight ratio
Webra SD 40 GT/ 12.69 oz /1.3 hp@16000 rpm's/ .1024 hp/oz
Webra SD50 GT/ 11.28 oz/ 1.5hp@16500rpm's/ .1329 hp/oz
Rossi 45 R27/ 15.10 oz/ 2.1hp@16000 rpm's/ .1390 hp/oz
Rossi 50 R67/ 15.52 oz/ 2.2 hp@18000 rpm's/ .1417 hp/oz
I think one can see two things, First look at the weight of the Webras, the 50 is lighter than the 40 so that means the 50 is probably a bored out 40. I wonder what the durability of this motor would be.
Two: I could not believe how light the Webras are, man those things are light. BUT look at the Power to Weight Ratio's P/W, the Rossi's kill-em. As a matter of fact the Rossi 45 has a higher P/W
than the Webra 50.
I picked up about 12% with my UltraThrust equipped Rossi 45 R27.That gives me 2.35 hp@ 17900 rpm's with a P/W of .1556 hp/oz.
*all numbers taken from MFG's web sites except for the numbers on modified Rossi.

Partial to Rossi. I've flown the incredible R45 and loved it. Then I bought a R53. Holy Crap!!!!! Now this is Pod Racing!!! On a 5 pound (or more) plane they are great. My R45 has 12 gallons of fuel through it with a 12.25x3.75 and keeps on pulling. Deadsticks are very rare and usually 'cause I ran 'er dry. I start it by spinning the spinner backwards half a turn with two fingers. Always on 10% fuel too!! Lov'em!!!

Rossi's are still heavy. And for me I think a Saito 72 would be one of my first choices for a fun fly motor. There as light as an os 46 fx

Best fun fly engine
In my opinion, The Saito 72 is right at the top of the list. All the motors mentioned are great , I've owned a webra hyper 40 & ran it on a scat cat Q 500, super good motor, & it would ou run my buddies Rossi powered Dodger. But the thing that makes me love the Saito isn't so much the awesome pulling power, it's the fuel economy " not to mention the cool 4-stroke sound" I have a 6oz tank on my Raven profile & I can fly for 12 to 13 min on it, & thats a lot of vertical climbs, & attempts at hovering. I had a Saito 56 on a Funtiger & gat 20 min flights with a 6oz tank on it several times. The guy that has it now has a SuperTiger 45 on it & 5 min flights is about all he can get out of it.

Rossi vs Webra
I originally started with the Rossi on an Aeron profile (R45). It weighed WAY-WAY TOO MUCH! It had good power and godd transition. The Rossi casing is the size of a 60 or larger. I see the power to weight ratio calculations above, and all I've got to say is I went back to the Webra 50. The Webra outperformed the Rossi hands down, and this was on the same aircraft. I dumped the Rossi, and was damn glad to get rid of it!
(Needless to say - this is my personal experience and opinion).
How does the Webras last you ask - I have 5 -6 of them. My oldest is about 5 years old with load knows how much time on it.
Regarding adding TT to the list, let me put it this way - I'd take the TT 46 PRO in a heartbeat over the Rossi.

I think you'd better try the ol calculator once again. I get .1417 hp/oz. Still the best P/W ratio, but not bu much margin at all, and comparing manuf numbers to your numbers.
It would be interesting to see the popular Webra 32 in this list as well, with stock muffler and with Mousse-can ultralight pipe.

With the above numbers on the Rossi .50 and the Webra .50, it looks like the Rossi wins. I wonder, how much time are we spending at 18,000 rpm ? I am usually tooling around at 4 or 5,000 rpm in a harrier, with little bursts of power to correct attitude. If the Rossi is 4oz heavier than the Webra then I will have to have another 2oz in the tail to ballance, or shift gear further away from the cg to balance(either way the plane will be less responsive, and heavier).
Where can I get the Webra?

OS
Easiest to break in
Great performance
Great throttle response
Absolute reliability
I consider OS to be the best value for my money. If you want more power, just put a pre-tuned pipe on it.

OS 50SX all the way
Well, I guess the poll is because of my comment about the Rossi in a different thread. I didn't wanted to trash the rossi, but just thought that it might be better for a different use then fun fly 3D.
I have had such great results with the OS 50SX, that I will stick with it. 0 (yes none, nada, nothing) deadsticks after about 35 flights (running Wildcat YS20/20 and 12.25x3.75 APC prop). Starts at the first or second flip. I have never used a starter (not even when brand new out of the box). Awsome power on my Top Cap.
If you prefer a four stroke, then probably nothing will beat the YS. I do have a Saito 72 that I will try out on a different Fun Fly, but just because I have it already. Very reliable also.
As always, just my very own opinion
