DA50 break-in and ignition battery
I just talked to DA and gor the following two piece of information:
It is better to break in DA50 in the air than on the ground
It is OK to use 4 or 5 cell Nicad or Nimh for the ignition battery. No regulator is needed.
I wonder if somebody is doing it differently.

RE: DA50 break-in and ignition battery
All gas motors benefit more by breaking them in airborne. Because the breakin period is a long duration it does no good to run them on the ground(You dont idle your new car in the driveway for 4-5 hours do you?).
Nicad and Nimh have been the standards for a long time. The electronic ignitions are pretty tolerant of either a 4.8 or 6v pack. Only since the Lithium's have shown up is there a need for a regulator. The DA-50 is a great motor!(I love mine!!!!!!)

Non-stop,
I'm on my 2nd gallon and loving it. I am trying to keep myself from the needles because it dies on idle and I need a low idle because the plane walks. I just run a 1000 mah nicad and fly 8 15 minute flights and the most i've recharged was 600 mah at the end of the day. This is one kick-***** engine and I am very happy with it. Did you leave your throttle spring on?
Joe

Why are you afraid to re set the low speed needle ? You think DA has ESP and knows all about your prop size and atmospheric conditions ? a gasser should idle at 1400 rpm all day long and still transition perfectly...Needle settings are not voodoo, experiment a little, you just might like the results..
If you want it to die, just set the low speed idle for about the middle of the throttle trim and kill it that way...

RE: DA50 break-in and ignition battery
I have read that it is better to leave the spring on...doubles as a failsafe, and it somehow keeps the butterfly from getting all beat up.
I was going to unhook mine but I posted a question yes/no and the consensus by those whom I hold in high regard said leave it hooked up.
So I did.
Doesn't seem to affect how it runs...

RE: DA50 break-in and ignition battery
why would you want to unhook the spring ??? Because of the servo load ? You might as well unhook the elevator servo too due to the load on it while pulling a loop or snap or simply flying around. Just use a nice strong servo on the throttle. I am using a JR 4131 on my DA 50 and a JR 4721 on my DA 100. No problems at all.
As for the needle adjustment: You will need to set the low end if you change and experiment with props. It's the same as with your 40 size glow engine. No problems or surprises here.

With a digital scale, I was able to determine that about 5oz of mass is enough to open thruttle to the full position. In this situation, there should not be high current draw to the thruttle servo.
So it is better to leave the spring as is.
