Default New to gas engines!

Finally decieded to make the switch from large glow to gas! Bought a Kangke Cap 232 1/4 scale and a Zenoah G-38 for my first project. From what I've read the G-38 is reliable and less expensive than others in the 40cc range. I was hoping some of you gas pro's would give me advice or info or any links to web sights that can help me with the first one! Any input would be great. Thanks.

Good luck with your firs engine, Zenoah engines are very reliable, as for gas engine mount I strongly recommend using a vibration absorbing one. It easy to make it by yourself, all you need is eight rubber washers 0.6 inch thick and 8 standard washer (same outer diameter). Place them at that order over the screw:
First std washer than rubber one, pass these screw through the fire wall, than rubber washer and std one. Tight the engine so the rubber washer will keep minimum of 40% of original thickness (you may control the side trust that way…)
Secure the screws with a wire.
That’s how ALL my giants build with.
rubber washer can be found at any Auto depot or garage.

Im not sure about the G38 but brison told me not to use soft mounts. They told me that the engine is to be bolted solid and that soft mounting this engine will hurt it.

But like i said it is a brison and not a G38. The brison does not put out much vibration.

Just my 2 cents.

I would not use soft mounts in a gas engine installation.
The vibration frequency will not be high enough to cause a problem.

Edgeman, I am putting together the same combo Cap+G38. I would mount it solid also. Most gassers don't need or like to be soft mounted, it can make them shake more. I have had many G38s. I like them a lot. They do lope around at idle but are pretty smooth at power. I first had the ZDZ 40 in the cap. Just using the G38 for a fun more reliable setup. Probably want to use a 18-10 prop. Let us know how it goes.

No soft mount? O.K. if you guys say so. At least I'll save some weight without the mount. I'll be using a apc 18x10. Would you guys recommend using wood blocks to space the engine. I'll need to make up the space from the mount?

Wood blocks will work.
Make sure that the shift of the CG doesn't hurt you.

You also may want to try a narrow blade 20x8.

Is the 20x8 narrow blade an APC prop?

If you soft mount your engine, Bisson mufflers void their warranty. That should be a good indication of the merits of soft mounting gas engines.

Ok know that you have chosen to hard mout the engine. If you are going to use wood to space the motor from the firewall you could use dowl's i used 2 and a half inch dowls to space mine. SEE PICS BELOW it spaced the bisson muffler perfect at 1/8 of an inch. and they are solid as a rock.

Malin

PS. I tied the fire wall to the next former using five 1/4 inch oak dowl's.

All that it indicates is that it's best to not bolt your exhaust directly to the engine... hard or soft mounted...

It seems as though Zenoah doesn't care how you mount the engine, but in the manual thay say if you use soft mounts to make sure the rubber is not too soft. I ordered 3/16 landing gear from TNT to replace the 1/8 junk that came with it . I don't have any complaints about the whole plane exept for the landing gear, our field is grass and that gear wouldn't last long. Friday I realized that I couldn't use the throttle pushrod that was supplied because it is steel so I had to order a nylon rod. I ordered 2 one for the next plane!

new to gas also, but have a g38 on a katana s and getting 8200 rpm's on the test stand with a master airscrew 20x6 classic.seems like a good combo, considering it turns 9500 rpm max.

Default RE: New to gas engines!

I am using a vibration free engine mount with ALL my gas engines (total of 5 at flight condition).
As describe before I am using vibration free and NOT soft one. No muffler problem (or others).
One model of mine is an 16.5 years old 1/3 scale Aeronca, which I using it to tow a 262 feet X 6" fiberglass strip, throw candies remote parachute and more.
It is nice to learn that a hard mount causing no problem though.
Thanks

By the way, how cal I add a picture to my reply?
