RE: bye bye spur gear
Buy 2 or 3 replacements. My 1st spur lasted about 2 gallons. Now I'm lucky if I can get 2 RUNS out of one. The last one that went out almost blew my lid. It sounded good so I guessed I had it adjusted just right. 2 minutes later it sounded like crap. A quick inspection showed a tooth completely missing.

loosen the slipper up a tad and use a piece of paper to set the mesh. Hopefully that will add some life to your spur. When I replaced my spur, I didn't locktite the nut holding the spur on. Within 3 passes up and down the street, the car rolled to a stop because the spur slipped like crazy. 2 minutes and a few twists of the wrench and my Savage was jumping curbs and chasing stray cats again.

Everybody says use paper to set the gap. I've done that tons of times (works GREAT on my batt cars & trucks) but it doesn't work on my Savage. You shouldn't have to locktite the nut on your spur gear unless the nut or shaft is worn. The nut has a nylon insert to act as locktite.

i do it by feel it should spin very freely but yet with a little ruffness (like if the engine is too close to the spur the ruff feel you get )or tighten it when it is loose when you tighten it from the bottom it pulls the engine closer to the spur i may sound nuts and not make any sense to you guys so im sorry but thats the only way i can explain oh by the way ive had 3 different engines and about 6gallons of fuel with my savage and NEVER blown a spur

its simple, get a steel spurgear.it'll never strip or melt and you gotta love that super charged sound you get from a steel spur gear:>[8D]

i agree, a steel spur gear would dromatically or even stop all the probs u get with composite/stock spur gears, though i supose u would still have to get the mesh right like lowseylos said

Can't argue with going to a steel spur but it will add weight and rotating mass and reduce performance some. Also, if your clutch is slipping against the clutch too much, it gets hot and melts the plastic spur gear. While many argue going to a steel spur is a bad idea, pretty much everyone agrees that switching from the plastic clutch shoes to aluminum shoes gives better bite on the bell and cooler clutch bell temps. I've melted 3 spurs because the bell got hot. So I now have a set of the Nova aluminum shoes on the way.
