Re-hinging
I have taken off the old covering from a 40 size Stik and in order to get a good covering job I also cut off the ailerons and elevator by cutting through the existing CA hinges. I left the rudder on as I can re-cover well enough in that case.
What is the best method to re-hinge? Just scoot along side the old hinges and make new slots or is there a better or easier option?

RE: Re-hinging
Depends on the type of hinges you want to use. I prefer to make my own "no gap Iron-on hinges" from FABRIC covering. There used to be a company called Granite state (I think) that marketed these. Since they went out of business, some of us make our own.

RE: Re-hinging
When I've had to re-hinge planes originally done with CA hinges, I've found it very difficult to get the new slots in reasonable places AND keep the new hinges straight. My solution has been to install small (1/12A) hinge-points alongside the original CA hinges. It's quick, accurate and strong.
Just my .02, hope it's useful.

RE: Re-hinging
I had problem with hinges in my UCD .60, with OS 120 FS vibration. 2 aileron hinges ripped off and aileron broke. Land OK and re-hinged all the plane with 1/8" point type hinges, drilling in the center of CA hinges (where is a little hole for CA flush when binding).
Works very well.

Depends on the size of the Robart point used....
If you use the appx 1/16 in dia 1/2A ones... then one on each side of each original CA hinge. (doubling the number of hinges)
If you use the medium... then 1 per original hinge (which should work out to the appx every 4 to 5 inches above)
If you use the huge ones... then I'd bet the drilled hole would cut the ailerons in half on the .40 size Stick.[&:]

RE: Re-hinging
I bought the 308 size, they are about 1" either side of the pin. I am going to try the method shown in the link above where drilling the holes was made through the original CA hinge in the trailing edge. The ailerons are new. This would put about 4 per aileron and about 5 inches apart.
So is the tip glue in to the wing first with some 30 min epoxy to be sure on the alignment?

RE: Re-hinging
Boss,
In the tutorial section of RCU there is an article on using Robarts with Gorilla glue. Very easy and I have re-hinged using this method on a 25% Extra ( that had CA hinges on the rudder) and also on a new plane and it works very well.
