All Vinyl Comp-ARF 3M Extra
I have followed a lot of threads related to painting the Comp-Arf planes.
I bit the bullet and covered mine completely in vinyl.
I turned out to be easier and cheaper than paint or monokote.
Total cost for vinyl was less than $70. That includes the logos, etc.
More pictures and a article on the process will soon be posted at www.comp-arf-world.com.

Daniel,
Great jobs! It looks nice and unique. How did you get the vinyl to fit the contours of the canopy hatch and the cowl? Where did you buy the vinyl set from? I recently finished my Extra 3.0m, too. I love the way it flies! Here is mine in action. Have you flown yours yet?
Thanks,
Kevin

The key to the contour is proper hi-performance vinyl, Avery A8 in this case. I went to the local sign supply and bought 30 feet of each color, and cut the design out myself. The colors are layed on seperately. I used rapid tac for all application.
It actually conformed to the canopy frame better than I expected. Looks like it was dipped in nail polish.
I cut out the graphics with a Stika 8. $250 machine, easy to use, cuts like the pros.
I have close to 20 flights on it, including one contest in unlimited last weekend.
I still have some dialing in to do, but it flys very well.

That looks real good. I was wondering if the whole plane could be done with vinyl. I may now have to order the all white 2.6 Comp-Arf Yak and do my own Shulman scheme. One question, How did you cut the design? You did the logos with a machine, was the scheme cut by hand?

Daniel.
I'm getting the all white 3M Extra in the next week or so. Would you be able to cut vinyl in the "Blood Drops" or "Water Drops" scheme and send out for cost and a fee? I am an employee of Avery Dennison, if you tell me the exact materials I may be able to obtain them.

Hi Da20 driver. Your plane looks flawless! Top notch work. I just finished a CA 2.6 Yak for a friend of mine. It is the red, yellow blue theme. I want to add some graphics to make it different from everyone elses. I was going to airbrush, but yours looks awsome. I know where to get the material, but not the cutter. Could you give me some info on where to get the machine you used?
Thank you,

DkJens,
I could probably cut that, but I'm not really set up for it software wise. I'm not really sure what it would take. John VH can probably answer your questions on that.
Vicster and Japan3D,
I cut the base trim scheme with a straight edge and a razor blade. It is actually almost exactly like covering with monokote. Cut the stripe to size, wet the location with rapid tac, position on the plane, and squeegee. There are some finer points to the technique, but it is real easy.
The graphics were cut with a Stika 8. It can cut graphics up to 6.75 X 40 inches. There is a yahoo group where most of the company logos can be found. It is the lowest cost cutter and sells new for I think around $350. I found a used one for $250. It pays for itself real quick!
After it was all said and done, it was a very satisfying experience. It was cheap and quick and the results are far better than I imagined they would be. Plus, if I grow tired of it, I can rip it all off and start over!
Couple more pics.
Thanks,
Daniel

Da20 Driver,
Thanks for the Info, does the place where you bought the vinyl have a website? I think it would be hard to find the vinyl here in Japan. Mail order would be best for me.

That is what I have done... Vinyl covering in a Shulman scheme.
Came out really nice I will attach a photo later.
I purchased the vinyl from Aerographics in Loveland colorado and James and I actually did full scale paper layouts and he cut all the curves and pieces for me for my 2.6 meter white/blue extra.
I actually like my tail treatment better than the Shulman scheme.
