Default Quadra identification...

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a used Quadra engine and want to confirm the identification. There is a serial number etched on the bottom "by hand", not stamped by a machine or anything. The serial # starts with a 40C Does this mean that it is a Q42 or a Q40? Does anyone know if serial #s were hand etched or where they stamped by a machine or template.

Thanks,

Grizak

One of mine has a : 4225: written with an electric pencil, which is probably what you mean. This is a 42 also. Quadra did do them that way. Hope this helps.

Can you post a pic? Does it have a steel or aluminum prop hub? Does it have a wire coming from under the fly wheel? Remove the muffler, how many rings on the piston 1 or 2?

Hi bdtsr,

Here is the answers to your question and some pics.

1)It has an aluminum prop hub

2)The only wire is the spark plug wire, and you can see it in the pics.

3)From the exhaust port, it looks like 1 ring.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Grizak

Looks like a later model 40 maybe a 42. Early models had point and a steel hub. The only way to tell the 35 and 40 apart was by the number of rings, other than measuring. Let me check my info from Dick Bennett. You can also go to bennettbuilt.com for Quadra info as well.

Stick a popsicle stick or a like piece of wood in the ex port to the other side of the cyl and turn the crank to push the piston up against it to make a mark against the ex port and measure from the end to the mark. Q 42 is 1 9/16 bore.

Flypaper2,

I tried the popsicle stick and it looks like it is 1 9/16ths. How much of a difference is there in this measurement between a Q35, Q40 and a Q42? Do you know the measurements for the other Quadras?

Thanks,

Grizak

Grizak,

The first 2 digits of Quadras serial number denotes the engine size. Dick Bennett told me this info a couple of years ago.

Q35 is 1 7/16 bore. Actually there were four different sizes. 35. 38. 40. and 42. When I retired and closed the small motor shop the sizes were hanging on the wall. Should have brought it with me I guess.
