Pull start or EZ Start 2
I dont know how many people have changed out their EZ start system for a manual pull start, but I just got mine from ebay in the post today and spent an hour or so installing it. Would have installed quicker had I known all I had to do was to pull the engine from the top [:@] .
Anyway, after installing it I was going to wait till we all go out next time to try it, but after reading someones post on the traxxas forum about how their ez start wouldnt turn over their engine I decided to go try it and see if I wasted an hour of my time and $15.00
WOW! What a difference.
When I had the EZ start on there, it would always take like 10 to 30 seconds to get it started for the first time, then subsequent times it might take 5 to 10 seconds of turning over the motor to get it to fire up. And often it would lock up for no apparent reason and not spin the motor. I tried the flooded engine procedures but never got anything out of it.
So I installed the manual pull start today, took it outside and gave it a yank and NOTHING! Gave it a second yank and she fired right up perfectly. I let it idle for a while and shut it off, waited a minute of so and tried again, first pull and she fired right up again.
No more 2 to 4lb brick in my pocket to carry around (EZ starter), now I will carry around a light glowplug ignitor.
Im thrilled with the pull start.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
Your crazy FlyingMist-but to each their own. If pull starts were so great, there wouldn't be starter boxes!
Its hard to pull start your rc & throttle it at the same time on hot re-starts. If ya loose your tune, you just don't spin the motor enough for it to fire easily.
Have you ever had your perfectly tuned motor not fire right before the main or qualifier? Nothing more frustrating than yanking away seconds before the start(go starters boxes!).
I have never, ever had my EZstart2 fail me(other than a bad plug).
For anything other than top-level racing, the extra weight is worth the convieience.
If your motor won't fire with a ezstart, it sure ain't gonna get better with a pull start!
Won't turn over? LOOSEN THE PLUG! (Your flooded or rich anyways)
My ezstart worked on breaking in my P2 and up to this very second.
Sorry for the long post on a short subject.
Nuff said.

I've watched my buddy restart his hot, he puts one foot in front of the left rear tire and one foot behind the left rear tire and then pulls with one hand and his feet keep the truck from pulling up with the starter, so I tried that out and its really easy to do.
I personally believe it is better, and I'll tell you why: When I had the EZ starter installed on the truck it was sluggish to start the motor even with a fully charged battery, then I pulled the blue wire off the glowplug and put a glowplug ignitor on it instead, and then used the EZ start to just spin the motor. This worked substantially better than using the EZ start "brick" to heat the glowplug and turn over the motor. So in my mind the EZ Brick just doesnt have enough oomph to do both jobs.
In any event I had to try mine again before leaving for work this morning just to be certain it wasnt a fluke that it started up so easily yesterday. Sure enough, it fired up on the 2nd pull this morning. Took me all of 3 seconds to get it running. The only time it took 3 seconds to get it running with my EZ brick was during the 2nd stage of breakin.
I suppose if I were a track racer, then I would have a starter box and use that, but when your tramping through the desert, or mountains looking for that great spot, it's kind of inconvienient to carry around a EZ Brick, let alone a starter box.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
pull starts start much easier mainly do to the extra power the glow plug recievs from the igniter.my truck almost always starts one pull and on hot starts you simply turn your throttle reim up alittle.not to hard.
and then theres the weight savings gained from the pull start.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
I understand your pain guys. It almost sounds like you using the gen 1 ezstart(but obviously not).
The ezstart2 is SUPPOSED to give full ignitor power even with a weaker battery-maybe not full turn over power but full ignitor power(as I understand it). Gen 1 ezstart would definitely give weak glow plug power.
I have heard of ez2 failures though. Personally I believe its in your tuning, priming(or over priming), plug choice, or 7.2 battery strength. I AM at the mercy of having a charged 7.2 though- 2400mah-no problems.
Like I said, 'to each their own'.
But for the many folks who have a slightly out of tune motor,
YOUR GONNA BE YANKIN' AWAY!!(remember that old rumor of the hard to tune 2.5...)
My P2 starts easily and rarely dies anyhow(same with my 2.5-r.i.p.).
I can relate to the purist in you though-I hate the idea of E start on a four stroke dirtbike-KICK IT!
Thanks for the racing slam FlyingMist. When I race its a GT. I just bash my Maxx.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
I hope you know I was just kidding about the racing is for sissys, hence the
Anyway, I may have spoken too soon. We went out today to have some fun, and it took a good 5 or 8 pulls to initially get it started. i think it started so quickly after installing it because I use alcohol to clean the motor when I had it out, and Im sure got some in the exhaust port of the engine. Anyway after the initial 8 pulls or so, it ran fine, then I decided to see if my brakes were adjusted correctly so that they wouldnt close the carb, and it turned out it still closed the carb and stalled the engine (guess I got more work to do in that area [:@] ), then I went to pull start it again, and what I found was that my throttle trim on the transmitter was set way too low (must have moved in transit) so I turned it to where it normally sits and it fired up on one pull.
I killed it again, and pulled the starter again only to find that the starter rope pulled right out of the starter (unfortunately it pulled out NOT on the handle end but on the motor end, guess the knot they put in it at the factory has come undone, so now I have to pull it apart and see if I can put the rope back in. [:@] So I guess thats just one downside of the pull starter.
Damn, damn, damn.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
I have a new revo and have been forced to use a glow igniter as the ez start 2 does not heat the glow plug at all. I brought it from america so dont know if traxxas here will solve the problem (England)

Yeah, the Ez Trash normally is the first thing thrown away. I gotta tear mine off of the tmaxx i got last night, and slap on the pullstart. I'd rather be pulling than starting up a maxx with a dead battery.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
Has anyoneone else had problems with the ez start not heating the glow plug? I think it's great for turning the engine over. Also when the ez is not cannected should both lights glow when pressed as the motor one is the only one that does on mine.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
if only the motor light is glowing then you have no glow plug, check wires and the plug to see if it works, personally i have had no problems with the easy start, as long as you prime the fuel line for a few seconds it fires right up, hot starting is just a 2 second press of the starter button and its away. also i am only using a 1700mh battery.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
When i swaped in my Epic .18 in my Tmaxx it came with a pull start. I trashed the ez start (hand nothing but probs with it from day one anyway) it was a pita breaking in the Epic on a pull start but now that its had a gallon or 2 run through it i can prime it, and it generally starts within a pull or two.
A starter box is ok , they really dont work well for a Tmaxx. I have one for my 1/8 buggy and i have mixed review. It works fine, WHEN i can get the motor started in the first place. [:@]
I agree its a lot easyer to just haul around the ignitor and thats it.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
HI I am new to nitro RC's
If I get rid of my electric start and go with a Pull Start do I
1) need to tie together the red and black wires from the electric start?
2) If I did that could I use the ez start to power the glow plug? or do I need a glow starter
3) wich pull start is best and will just bolt on to the Revo
4) do I need to make a cut out in the body for the pull
thanks

Im running an os 18 cv-rx its a bummer cos it was hard for me to part with my e-z. If i had the choice id run the e-z but the reliability and power ore than makes up for it.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
I'm a litte worried about hurting the motor if it is flooded. The ez start will not start when it is flooded but I could just pull the pull start and not know it was flooded.

RE: Pull start or EZ Start 2
You will feel a flooded motor with a pull start. If you keep pulling through a flooded motor, thats when the pull starts start breaking.
I would suggest to learn the EZstart and maintaining it. EZstart failures are most always 'operator error'.
Hard starting motor? You want a EZstart. Hot resarts? EZstart. Carrying it around? It has a belt clip!! Of course then your pants might fall off. [:-]
Weight? Surely your driving ability will make up for THAT.
If you can't check your motor leads, or check your blue glow wire(and have a spare), or CHARGE YOUR BATTERY LOL, YOU DESERVE A PULL START!!!
