Default GP 1/3 Pitts & ZDZ 60..?

Hi...

I*m thinking of picking up a GP Pitts bipes. Now, I have a ZDZ 60 that is going eventually in a Pica 1:5 P-51D. But for now I*m thinking of putting it in a Pitts. What do you think, would this be asking for trouble..I know I have to beef up the plane a bit.. So to you that have a similar BIG gasser in this bird. How does it hold together. Any tips on beefing up the firewall..?
Anything that I should be aware of..

Thanks for youre time..

There is a ton of information already here on this subject--(I see you are new --welcome- great to have you)- Anyway, just do a search on the subject "Great Planes Pitts"--then have fun.

Default GP 1/3 Pitts & ZDZ 60..?

Hi...

I know there is a lot of treads on this bird, but what I would like to know from those that has a big engine, is how the airframe holds together, and if there was anything they would do different.

Default GP 1/3 Pitts & ZDZ 60..?

A friend of mine tried this very combo, but the zdz wouldn't fit without redoing the whole firewall to clear the carb. he couldn't get the motor back far enough to fit in the cowl. I'm sure it's possible though if you want to do the work. As far as being able to handle it, he ended up putting a G-62 in it and i flys great. has unlimited vert. but isn't grossly overpowered. after flying it I wuold be a little disappointed with much less.

Default pitts/zdz 60

I 'm working on that combo right now.

You have to work on the firewall for the carb. clearance but that is normal with any rear induction engine.

Some people say that it is too much power but I like the extra power and bipes have a lot of drag.

Modific.

-Pinned the firewall with dowels
-Tri. stock in all the firewall area
-Fiberglassed the firewall
-Made 5/8 +- spacers for the engine to clear the cowl
-Making some rods right now for the tail wich seems too weak for me ( at least with an engine this size ).
- Enlarge the cowl hole for the crankshaft

I opted for the 2 wing servo configuration and will use 2 Jr 8411 on ailerons.

Will use a TME smoke system.

Right now I'm working on the break in of the engine that only has three tanks of fuel.

If you decide to go with this combo be patience with the engine break in that shuold be 3 hours @ 4000 rpm or less .

Will post some pic laters .

Hope this helps.

Default ZDZ 40

How about a ZDZ 40? Should have more than enough power and it is much smaller and lighter.

The zdz 40 should fly it good but not unlimited .

AJf2 flew one with that engine and switched to a Taurus 52 because he said that the power was limited, this plane weight around 17 lbs. and its a bipe that has more drag.

Thanks EPC--but I never got around to installing the ZDZ40--I think that was AEROBOB--anyway this is what a Taurus 52 looks like when it's mounted--

I got 5 bambo rods per side--then glassed over that for strength. It is holding up OK so far--HOWEVER--I do believe in throttle managment.

I know this is a little off subject ,but I justa aquired a 1\3 scale laser with a zdz 60. It has unlimitted vert but it takes about 3\4 throtle. It has a 22x10 carbon fiber prop and i was wondering what prop to use to get better vert. performance. 24x10 or 8?

Default Engine

I am not sure much about the plane but from what I have seen on the plane and final weight it looks to me to be a prime choice for the new ZDZ 50 coming out. It weighs less than the ZDZ 40 and has the power of the ZDZ 60. Can't beat that. The motor has 5 ports, the 40 has 3. I am holding off and plan on getting the ZDZ 50 to replace the Moki in my 11lb MW Extra 300. Should be an awsome performer.

EPC--You got a good memory--I posted pics of the Pitts with the ZDZ40--but talked myself into the Taurus before I installed it. Love the Biela prop--see the thread in the Giant Engines forum to see my thoughts on performance. However, somebody mentioned one coming apart- (ouch)

Default GP 1/3 Pitts & ZDZ 60..?

Thanks for piccies Epc. If this holds together, I'm going for it. I'll guess that the new ZDZ50 would be the ideal powerhouse for this bird. But as said before, I have a 60 so I*ll try that first..

BTW:what kind of muffler will you be using, I have been thinking of a Bisson Pitts (how odd;-)

Thanks again for tips and piccies.

Right now I'm breaking in the engine with a B&B but I'm not sure If I'm going to use this muff. because it's too noisy and kind of restricted.

I think i'll buy The J & A pitts.
