Default Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

I have read many posts where people get overheating issues with 100:1 Amsoil. Purple engine head, engine head overheating, ...

That oil ratio seems to me very lean for a 50CC engine.

I have an MVVS1.6 with Mobil 1 MX2T that runs very good at 40:1. The engine head looks like a new one after 10 gallons and my engine runs like a champ [sm=thumbup.gif]. No black plug and no smoke!

Is there someone who use Mobil 1 MX2T, 40:1 ratio on a DA-50 with Slimline Pitt muffler?

Daniel

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

Not a DA, but I've been using it for several years at 32:1 in a ZDZ-80, 3W-100 and 3W-106.
The rings stay very clean - and I find less deposits than running either Klotz or Honda HP-2.
I doubt that overheating problems can be solved by a switch in oil. Airflow through the cylinder fins does the cooling. I don't think that a change in oil will lower the friction enough to change the amount of heat created by the motor. The motor may last longer by running more (or different) oil by reducing the rate of wear.

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

I have run it in DA- and again ,clean as a hound's tooth
also no sagging , pulling the engine to peak power
BUT I don't have hours and hours on it -Idid it for an engine and a kit test/magazine write up.
So far, the best (not by much) of any of the oils I have run.
DA recommends what they have tried over and over and they are confidant will work .
They have not run tests on the MX2T so they simply don't feel solid in recommending it
Completely understandable to me!
I really don't put much faith in some of the recommendations I see-
Unless the experiment is controlled, it is not much good
Heating IS the problem -
So--- great oil plus a shi--y cooling/and or needle setup, still equals a burned up engine.

Thanks for the info on Mobil 1 Dick. I have both oil in my garage

Dick
What do you think about the 100:1 oil ratio on a DA-50? Will it reduce the DA50 lifetime if i use that oil with the right needle setting and fly IMAC routines?

The motor may last longer by running more (or different) oil by reducing the rate of wear.
Diablo, can you work out and give more details on your comments please?

I am going to call DA next monday to know if they support the warranty when using Mobil 1 oil ...

I broke in my DAs (100 and 150) with PENNZOIL 32:1 for 4 to 5 gallons.
Then I went to COOL POWER synthetic oil 32:1.
My engines never over heated, or quit yet.
You basically have 1/2 of a 100, so these should still work.

I have one full bottle Amsoil 100:1 for sale now!

100:1 is too lean, 40 or 50:1 make more sens to me.

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

I have been running Mobil 1 MX2T in a DA-100 (CA 2.6 Extra) with great results. Very clean as Dick mentions. The first 3 or 4 gallons, I ran it at 32:1 and then switched to 50:1 for the last 6 or so gallons. No problems what so ever... it burns very clean. I see no reason to change. The holy wars around oil are all voodoo at the end of the day of you ask me. Use a good oil at the manufacturers recommendations (both the engine and oil side) and be done with it... the holy wars will continue regardless as to what I say.

That's what i like the most with Mobil 1 . it's very clean oil compared to black-blue Amsoil.

Is there a special reason why people stay at 32:1 ratio after break-in instead of 40:1 or 50:1?

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

Personal preference and recommendations from the manufacturers more than anything else... 50:1 was not too lean and not too rich, so that's what I'm running. I know Dick has had good luck at 32:1 with the Mobil 1 based a several guys running it in Salt Lake City in the ZDZ's. I have a ZDZ 60 in a TC 27% Extra 300, and I have been running 32:1 in it. (Mobil 1 again) 32:1 is an easy mix... 8 ounces to 2 gallons if memory serves me correct.

Again, just pick something from a main stream manufacturer and follow the recommendations... you will be fine.

For the text right out of the DA manual as of 02/2003:

----------------
For break-in, we recommend a petroleum based oil such as Lawn Boy Ashless or Pennzoil Air Cooled 2 stroke oil at 32 to 1. Run at least 4 to 5 gallons of petroleum oil/gas mix for break-in. Peak rpm should be over 6,000 during the break-in process.

After the break-in process, we recommend a high quality synthetic oil. As for brands of oil, there are many good ones on the market. Some oils, and their mix ratios, that Desert Aircraft recommends are: Amsoil "original" (100 to 1), Morgan's blue Cool Power (32 to 1) and Bel-Ray H1-R (50 to 1). These oils can be found at most motorcycle shops.
----------------

As you can see, they are not getting too excited about what they recommend.

Pick one... mix it up at the right ratio and go fly!

that big ad by AMsoil is nice - but I don't find any comparison info between their product and Mobil MX2T
Really does not matter tho -
Any comparison would be like a Ford vs - Toyota ad ----
both good products but all those comparison write ups are PURE, 100%-------- Horsepucky

The link compares 4 stroke oils. Our 2 stroke oils are a totally different product.

The comparison information given also appears to be some years old.

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

I have talked to DA today about the very good synthetic Mobil 1 MX2T.

DA do not support the engine warranty, if i use Mobil 1 MX2T.[:@]

The DA-50 engine has been designed to run perfectly with Amsoil 100:1.
Sometime, more oil like 80:1 is worst than lean oil and that could bring warm issues. (comment from DA)

I don't have other choice to go with Amsoil 100:1, if i want a fully warranty engine.[:'(]

Anyway, thanks for all you answers guys!

I have a hard time with your wording.
The engine was designed to run on 100-1?
How about "It has been run -for extended operation by a number of people on Amsoil 100-1 with the best results seen to date.
Given that track record -I don't blame em for not giving a blanket endorsement of other brands
Did you also ask how the latest formulation of Amsoil 100 was working out ?
is it as good /same/ better?
I would have no doubts about using Mobil 1 MX2T in any of the gas model two stroke engines.
But how you use it means far more than what you use.

If you don't like using 100:1, DA also recommends Bel Ray H1R mixed at a much richer ratio (I think they say 50:1).

FWIW, check that out.

No i did not.

I already have Amsoil 100:1 Synthetic pre-mix 946ml, not the new Saber one like we can see on the website.

I do not know if there is a diffrence between Saber and the one that i have, but after trying the Mobil 1 MX2t, i know Mobile1 would work great at 50:1.

The only problem is DA do not support the warranty with that oil. Anyway, i have all winter to take a decision.

Everyone look at the above post with the Quote from the DA manual, it does not say that it will void the warrenty for the wrong oil, they SUGGEST a high quality synthetic oil after break in. I don't think they can legally tell you that you have to run any specific oil, just one that won't carbon up the engine and will lubricate it properly! after all these engines are made of the same metal and are built the same no matter what it says on the side of the engine case, DA, BME, ZDZ, Zenoah, Ryobi, Stihl, and so on. after many problems with my DA 50 at 100:1, rod failures and crank problems, it's MX2T for me also. 100:1 is too lean, we don't run our weedies at that ratio and they last for years. Hi Rick
What did DA tell you about rod failures and crank problems? Could Amsoil 100:1 be the problem or something else?

Daniel: DA did not give any reason for the failures, they gave me the standard responce that they have not had problems with any other engines, but I know better from the posts on RCU and other fliers problems. I think that they don't want to admit that they should have done more R&D before they started selling the DA 50. I am a mechanic by trade and know about engines and 100:1 is pretty lean, if you happen to run the engine hot without proper cooling you can have problems at that ratio. they swear by the Amsoil at 100:1 but I think as long as you use a good quality synthetic oil and mix at manufacturers ratio you should not have problems. our chain saws and weedies don't have these problems and we treat them like crap! Rick.

Default RE: Is Mobil 1 MX2T good for DA-50?

My personal reason for trying the Mobil was based on the MVVS notes, re: possible bearing failure due to admittedly small sizes used in making a compact engine.-So the recommended lube (Mobil) was noted.
Many of the chain saw engines use very substantial low ends - heavy -yess - but hard to bust.
So looking back at my early hot rodding escapades - I remembered that small bearing areas in early engines - when reworked to produce increased bearing loads -- was also a problem .
So I tried the stuff - at 32 -1.
engine power is NOT compromised .
the upper end stays absolutely pristine and the cushioning in the bearings seems to be working.
I say this because I can't find any detectable clearance accumulating in the crank/rod/wrist pin.
In checking engines by slight prop movements - the only "clearance" I find , is the ring -moving up/down in the piston --which is exactly what I wanted to see.
But I need to put a lot more time on the engines before I am really sold.
So far tho - it all looks great.

I tried MX2T today and burned about a gallon. It seems to be fine. At 32-1 it is more expensive than amsoil 100-1. My engine is on a pipe and I fly the throttle all the time, mostly in the 1/3 to 3/4 ranges. Not sure if it was placebo but it seems my engine was running a bit better and a bit cooler. We are also having wonderful weather and the high temp today was about 65 degrees. Thank you for your explanation Dick. That is very very good grounds to give this oil and generous ratio, a try. I could feel a difference in how the fuel feels to the touch too. I tried both the amsoil mixed and the MX back to back and there was a noticable difference. Interesting topic.

Hi Joe!

I have ran 40:1 MX2T on my MVVS1.6 all summer (over 10 gallons) with great results and no carbon up. If your engine is broke-in, i would go with 40:1 or 50:1 as per mix ratio recommended by DA.

Like Mattew George wrote, he runs 50:1 MX2T with no overheating issues and it's cheaper than 32:1 if the oil's cost is an issue for you.

Wow, 65F in November! We have 32F today in QC, Canada and all my planes are on the basement for winter storage[:'(][:'(]

Come on down Daniel! [8D] The cost is no issue, just an observation. I only found it in a pint container, does anyone know if there are bigger?
