I have a nelson qm-40 racing engine with 7x9 carbon fiber prop turning 23,000 on the ground. It is on a 3 pound plane. It is hand launched. Am i going to have trouble getting airborne and is my vertical performance going to be poor? I want it to lauch like a rocket and dont really care if i go 180 or 220 mph. Am i better off getting a pylon racing engine with a 8.8 diameter prop?

To answer your last question first, a Q40 Nelson engine will not turn up a 8.8 diameter prop (unless the pitch was about 5 or 6). I would buy one of the APC Carbon props 7.4x8...
As far as vertical performance with a 3 pound plane. It will go straight up right out of sight, and probably pick up speed in the process. A regular 4lb Q40 plane will do that.
Launching it like a rocket is the big question? I would imagine it would take off........maybe somebody out there has tried this??
Have fun
