Hi Guys,

Anyone got tips on how to remove tires that have been glued with CA to wheels? I'm trying to change out the tires on my Duratrax Evader, and pieces of the old tire are still glued to the rim. I tried rubbing acetone based nail polish remover on to loosen the glue, but it did not seem to work.

How do you guys get the tires off? Is it worth the effort or am I better off just picking up new wheels?

It's easier if you do it while the whole tire is still on the rim, but acetone should work through it with time. You can speed the process up with the whole tire because you can pull on it a bit.

Another good method is boiling water (just in a pan on the stovetop). That might be easier with your situation. Once the CA gets hot, it turns to mush, and all the little junk should come off pretty easy.

Yep - sometimes you just get down to a few stubborn bits that won't cooperate, and have to shave 'em off with a blade.

try splitting the tire down the middle, then turning the two parts inside out. once you get this done it is fairly easy to push them off the beads from the inside out.

I can't remember where I read this, but I tried it and it worked very well.

Place some foil on a cookiesheet and place the wheels/tires on that. Toss them in your oven for 10-15 minutes @ 350 degrees. Middle Rack BTW. Worked great for me.

I had no luck at all removing the stock tires on my electric evader ST.

I first tried just pulling on them (which usually works but they wouldnt budge, I then tried the boiling water thing but the rims warped before anything happened to the glue, I tried it again with another tire and the tire actually split open in a few places, I then tried some nail polish remover (had acetone in it so I thought it would work) but that didnt do anything either.


For some reason, the stock durtrax brand tires were the only ones Ive ever had problems getting off, anytime I've tried to remove proline brand tires they'll come right off.

I had the same experience as you ...

Acetone did not work. Boiling water just warped the wheels. Time to order some new wheels

my glued tires were ad i could pull them off until the last one where it was glued so much i ripped the tire, luckily glued it back on so u couldnt see the rip

I usually boil my wheels for 5 mins in water...

then peel the tyres off... but some cheap rims can split and deform using this method, best to use it only on 1/8th buggy and 1/10th carbon rims..

Acetone will work, but not in 15 mins. I always reuse my rims if they are still in good shape. I put a 1/2 gallon of acetone in a 1 gallon paint can. Cut tire off rims. Place rims in acetone for at least 24 hrs making sure they are completely submerged. Remove, peel off any rubber thats left on, rinse and reuse. They will come out looking like new. I have saved tons of money doing it this way.

great Idea Fyrefup, and I bet that 1/2 gallon will last a long time as long as you seel it up well. I have like 3 sets of rims for my buggy sitting around, off to homedepot.

Nail polish remover is much more expensive than straight acetone. A good long bath in acetone has always worked for me. Long means at least overnight.
