ZDZ 80 IGNITION TIMING
I sent an email to RCShowcase about a ZDZ 80 single with a Menz 26 x10S prop and pitts muffler that will not rev over 5700 rpm. They told me to move the sensor bracket all the way clockwise when looking at the front of the engine. It is presently set per the directions on their website. Has anyone else tried this ? Also what size and type of socket is needed to remove the spark plug ?

Sounds like they are asking you to advance your timing.
That will make it harder to start but should give you more power.
I have done this with a Brison with mechanical advance but never with an ignition with electronic advance.

Yes, that is what they are suggesting . I am just concerned about changing it that much from the recommended (website)setting. To move it all the way will move the sensor about 3/16 " ! I guess I can change it a little at a time and go from their ?

The way the sensor and holder are setup, moving the sensor to the full advance positions is just about optimum timing. Make sure that your sensor has not rotated in the holder, that can also cause retarded timing.

Advancing timing to make more power is vastly overrated..There is a point where the engine runs best, 28 degrees BTDC, give or take a few degrees...ANYTHING more or less either makes the engine run hot or slower...Been there, mysef and TKG have been doing this for almost 20 years...You can play around all you want with timing and it always comes back to the same point, 28 degrees...[8D]

rcrick, I don't know which pitts style muffler you have but if it's a Bisson and if it still has the swagged tips you are in luck. By cutting the tips off you will gain an instant 300 rpm, far more than dinking with the timing. You won't notice much increase in the loudness either.

Advancing the timing all the way on a ZDZ-80 IS about 28 degrees. The sensor holder allows you to retard the timing quite a bit from there. They can be retarded enough to knock off at least 600 rpm...been there.

RE: ZDZ 80 IGNITION TIMING
rcrick,
I've got a ZDZ 80 in a 1/3 scale CAP.
I totally agree with RCIGN1. I messed with the timing a little earlier this year. My observation was, just as RCIGN1 said, it ran hotter and there was no real performance gain. It also noticeably increased vibration. Set it were the instructions say, and leave it alone.
I also echo Big_Bird. I cut the knurled-over-ends off of the end of the down tubes on my Bisson pitts muffler (effectively shortening the down tubes by an 1/8 inch). I immediately gained 300 RPM.
BTW, I'm turning a Bambula 24x10 at about 6400 RPM. I'm at 5400 ft elevation.
Good Luck.
