KJ66 6 or 12 Sticks?
Hello Turbine Builders,
I'm in the process of building a KJ66 from the Kamps plans. The plans show a 6 stick design. I've seen several engine designs with a 12 stick design. What are the advantages/dis-advantages of this modification? Most of the turbines (wren) show the sticks as straight tubes, the Kamps has a 30 degree bend, why? I would appreciate any input or discussion on this puzzling subject. Thanks,
Pat

RE: KJ66 6 or 12 Sticks?
I have everything from a 4 pound thrust engine to a 40 pounds of thrust and they all have 6 tubes no more. The reason to bend them is to make them slightly longer to give the fuel more time to vaporize before exiting at the end of the tube. 6 tubes should be fine for you.

desmop, using 12 sticks in your KJ will increase evaporization area, thereby making the system more efficient. However, if your goal is only 80N, 6 sticks will do just fine. Beyond that you will have so much air moving through that the flame will move further and further aft in the chamber, until it flies through the turbine wheel and out the nozzle. That way it will be ineffective and put a lot of (temp.) stress on the turbine wheel.
A standard KJ design will do fine on 6, when you want more power out of this design you should go with 12.
The bend explanation of pegasus is correct
Miniflyer

....Couldn´t agree more on miniflyer and pegagus. Twelve sticks are only required on high-flow engines which uses larger 70 mm compressors. Six sticks works fine on my two KJ66´s from 1999, logging both more than 300 flights.
