Default Battery install ?

Ive been looking at a lot of the posts and pics of how people put the battery for the ignition under the cowling. I was under the impression that charging lithium batteries out of the plane and in a fire proof container was the accepted practice. Somehow i dont think that every one is removing the ignition battery for charging. Isnt placing the ignition battery in the fuselage a bad idea due to interference to the receiver?

It seems to me that using lithium on ignition is a waste anyway. I use a 5 cell AAA size Nimh pack, it weighs 2 oz. No regulator needed, will fly my DA-50 well over an hour without recharge, and can be recharged in about 5-10 minutes.

Lithiums are great on a receiver, but on ignition I think they add unnecessary complexity.

I had a feeling but when you look at the fromeco deals they sell the 3 packs as a deal had me wondering where to put the little bugger
Ill be rethinking the ignition battery. Thank you for your reply Ill be looking at buying the servos and batteries in a few months. I hope this project is done before flying season starts

Default RE: Battery install ?

The batteries that have had the problems have been for the most part exclusively Li-Polys. The Fromeco and Duralite batteries are Lithium Ions. Li-ons are contained in a "can" similar to nicads and nimh. Li-polys are wrapped in a thin sheet that can be cut or punctured. In any case, the Li-ons have not been a problem to date, and permanant mounting in the fuselage is not an issue. Using any lithium battery requires that you pay attention to the charging rates and times. DO NOT try to fast charge ANY Lithium battery.

Those that are using the lighter engines on the 28% planes can find it difficult to balance the plane using a Li-On for the ignition. Using a good 4.8v or regulated 6v 1,400 to 1,800mAh "AA" nicad will help in the balance, and still provide plenty of juice for the ignition. Using the 4.8 volt nicad on the ignition will save a couple of dollars to boot.

As far as interference is concerned, today's radio's and equipment is far better than what was used in the early days of gas engines, and is not as susceptable to some of the RF. The ignition systems are also far superior to what had been available before. A very large percentage of problems that are incurred by "ignition" noise are not ignition at all, but in reality mechanical vibration noise caused by loose parts or wires, poor fitting connectors, or other areas where something is loose or vibrating and causing intermittant contacts or metal to metal vibration.

That's one of the reasons that I reccommend that old or previously crashed parts not be used in a new giant scale gasser. It's also a good reason to consider above average computer transmitters and strong, high quality servos.

Like Tom, I use a small NiMH on the ignition (I use 4-cell however) and Li-Ion on the receiver. I use a single 2200/2400mAh from Fromeco on my giant monoplanes and a single 4400/4800mAh on my giant bi-planes. I have Kurt put 14 ga wire on the battery and regulator and additional leads on the regulator to plug into the receiver.
