Mounting gas engine
I need to bring the gas engine forward by 1/2 inch . Would a piece of 1/2 ply suitable lightened or 4 pieces of 1/2 inch aluminium blocks serving as standoffs be better? Would one method be better than the other from a vibration standpoint? Tks

Sportflyer,
I would go with the ply if you want less vibration. The surface area of the ply will absorb more vibration than that of 4 aluminum blocks acting as standoffs. Hollow out the center section of the ply if you are concerned about weight.

Be careful using plywood as standoff's. I have had even hard birch ply compress, and the engine loosen. I found the best standoff is an oak dowel. I use a 1 1/4" oak dowel, with fender washers between the dowel, and engine. Once tightened down, it stays there and no compression problems. Scott

Oak dowels are good!! I used them on my Fly Baby / G-26. I replaced 2 of the soft ply in the kit with 1/4 aircraft grade. I used one of the 1/8 ply supplied for the outsice piece. The dowels are actually "countersunk" in that outer 1/8" ply. (I ended up 1/8" thicker than plans. ....lownslo..

I guess my choice would also be oak dowels. If you are concerned about the oak coming apart, then wrap the down in fishing line then CA the entire surface and holes. This will strengthen the fibers of the wood.

RE: Mounting gas engine
I got my oak dowels at either Home Depot or Lowes. They had a section with soft wood and then a hardwood dowel section, so be careful what you pick. They will be marked on the label and they will be heavier. I was hesitant about using wood.... but they are great! Make sure you cut the ends accurately. I used a chop saw. Good luck.....lownslo

Where do you purchase Oak dowels ? Most of the hobby dowels are not made from oak. Tks

RE: Mounting gas engine
Interesting idea about using oak dowels for standoffs.
I was going to order some aluminm standoffs for mounting my 3W-75 but now I am considering the dowel method.
The 3W-75 is alot bigger than the G26 engine, do you guys feel the dowels will work on the 3W-75??

RE: Mounting gas engine
Since I only need 1/2 inch , can I use a 1/2 in piece of oak board , cut some one inch squares then drill hole in center. ? However the wood grain will be different from dowel. Could use also 1/2 thick squares made from MDF board?

Yes, I would recommend that you turn them in a lathe if you have one.
The surface needs to be flat so that it is a solid mount.
Make sure you dress the surface so it is flat.
