What makes a good hobby shop?
Just wondering what you all look for in a good hobby shop. Is it the selection, location, prices, people, ect........? What makes you pick where you go, or if you just shop online. I am looking into opening one and want input from the people who enjoy the hobby. Thanks.

RE: What makes a good hobby shop?
I need someone working there that knows what he is doing.
Someone that gives very good prices.
At my hobby shop, i was missing a peice to my easy start, and instead of having to buy a new starter, he just opened up the other one and took the peice out.
I like the deal that my HS has that if you buy a truck from them, if you break a peice, they give it half off.
I need a big selection in trucks and cars, bodies, gas, etc.

First off it has to be in the same city, not 2 thousand miles away accessible only on the net. Next it has to employ people that actually run, race, and work on the r/c models they sell. Last but not the least is that the parts are in the shop. So far as smiling faces and winning personalities go there is a lot con men out there who's bottom line is sell the product and not the service.

First is the service, what THEY are willing to do for you. I'm talking about ordering parts, helping you out with problems (if RCU hasn't already solved it!) and generally being as helpful as possible. Then comes the stock they carry and the prices for parts.

RE: What makes a good hobby shop?
I think it's the people that drive me back to their store. The people that are real friendly and cool. I think it's pretty awesome when the people working there are involved too (ex: the hobby shop also runs a track and the employees are out there corner marshaling, helping people out, giving advice, etc...). And to have a nice selection of parts from different companies is always a plus. The willingness to order a part if it isn't in stock or the shop doesn't even carry it. A good location is also a good idea...Have the store where there would be a lot of people. Having a track or a few tracks really seems to help out too; it gets people that are not involved in the hobby to come and check out the races (I mean who doesn't like these little things...they are unbelievable!) and become involved. Put yourself out there too. Here's an example of how I got involved in R/C: I was at a local car show checking out all the cool muscle cars when this guy whips out some gas-powered R/C car and I was totally fascinated by it (since the only R/C I have ever been exposed to at the time was Nikko and Tyco and stuff like that). I searched the crowd of people for the driver and talked to him for a little while. He had a stand out at the car show that was promoting his hobby shop. I passed the stand earlier and thought nothing of it (same for everyone else...there was absolutely no one at the stand the whole day), but then he brought out his car and everyone stopped and stared. He then had quite a crowd surrounding his stand[8D]. And that really ties in with the whole track idea as well...once people get up close and see exactly just how freakin' cool these things are (watching the races at your track...hint hint), they love them and want to know how they can become a part of it. And holy crap, there just so happens to be a hobby shop right next to the track! Bam! You're in business...
However you plan on doing it, I give you my best wishes for the best of luck

RE: What makes a good hobby shop?
Thanks for the ideas. I am looking into property big enough for the shop to have a track. The closest LHS is over 50 miles away and most of that is driving down a winding mountain road from 7000 feet down to 1500 feet. I want to carry Traxxas, AE, Losi, HPI, and OFNA. But will consider others. If I dont have it, I WILL ORDER IT!!!! Prices will be fair to both and I will match any others add on the same item. I will offer free help to work on cars and that is to teach others how to work on their own RC. I also want to get a club going at the local JR. High and high school that will give kids a chance to hang out and RC at the track in my back yard 1 or 2 days a week. Good clean fun. I will not be some greedy sales guy, but an owner that has been in the hobby since 1983. Thanks guys and keep the ideas going. I want to make this work and you guys are helping a lot.

Just remember, if you have good prices, what you lose in profits, you make up in business, espesically when you are the only one in the area. also my LHS gave me a free gallon of nitro when I bought my car, and that incourages people to stay in the hobby and come back to you. as far as electric, I dunno like a free battery or half off a battery (im a nitro guy, I don't know how much batteries are)
