Giantscaleplanes.com 72" Extra - Need an Engine Recommendation
Guys,
I have a GSP 72" Extra. What would be the best gasser to put in it? I can choose between a G-23, G-38, Q-42, Q-35, Q-50, US-41, or a Poulan 46 conversion. I need some direction from people who know more than I do. [8D]

Brokensolo,
I would go with the RCS 140 or maybe even the RCS 180... This plane is on the small side for gas... You will end up with a pretty high wing loading, but it should fly pretty good...

MVVS has some small gasers, but I am not really familar with them....
Count on the plane coming out at about 12 - 13 pounds maybe a little more... If you can swing it you might want to look at 84 inch + wingspan 50cc plane... you will be MUCH happier!
You can get into a new 28% WildHare for about $1700 or $1800... Maybe less depending on your servo and engine choices... You could probably find a slightly used one for much less than that...
Althought the 72" Extra will carry a small gas engine it is really just to small for that... When the wing loading goes up a plane becomes more and more difficult to fly...
Go for the larger plane you will not be sorry...

I have one with an MVVS 1.60 glow almost done, but just never got around to finish it off. Looks to be 12.5lbs RTF when it's all decked out. This is not an ideal 3D machine. Not to say it is a bad airplane, just that it isn't optimized for 3D. None of the mangeto gas engines you mentioned are gonna do well 3D. A Poulan 46 converted to elec ign might possibly work, but it'll hang on the prop fine and terrible with anything else.
If you must... I agree Saito 1.80 or 2.20 to keep the power/weight as high as possible.
