For power I shoe-horned in a Jetcat P-120!! Custom made main tank (42oz) in fuse. I was pretty hard on Henry about the equipment install..thanks for your patience man! But I wanted the boards to look good.

I wanted this one to look a little more 'scale' , so I went with the nose strut from Ed Dobias at RC Crafters. Ed does absolutely fantastic work, and is a real gem to work with ... he even installed the wheels on the struts.. Henry added some detail to the nose strut ( Landing light and box)

So here are the details:

Yellow F-18 ARF in Prototype colors
JetCat P 120 power
JR Electronics/ Servos
4-3421 on Ail/ Flaps
2-8411 on Stabs
1-2721 on Steering
1-351 on Retract
BVM Gauges/ fill valves

Yellow Main Struts
RC Crafters Nose Strut
Just-the-Pits Cockpit Kit

BVM Wheels and Brakes
Tam Custom Bifurcated pipe for F-18 single ( mod for P120 power)

Thanks to all who helped..

YEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAWWW!!!!!!!

Just go easy on the power through those turns!!! I've put that ARF to the test with a P-80, and it handles it at full speed, full elevator. With a P-120, it's anybody's guess....

Use caution, and you'll probably be just fine. When/where are you gonna do the maiden?

As for the calls, it was my pleasure :-)

Thanks Shaun

I'll be turning the power down on the P-120 so it should be just fine, I always baby the throttle on my planes anyway. I' m planning on the maiden in El Toro..with smokin' Joe McBride when his schedule allows. I'm thinking a couple weeks until my schedule is open.

Cheers!

Sean, Do you think this Jet would be grossly underpowered with a 14lb turbine? Clean wing ofcourse...

Luis, I have a F-18 single with the wren 54 14lbs of thrust. The power is perfect for this jet, it flies very fast and with great authority. It will definetly not be underpower with the 14lbs thrust.

I too am looking to complete my single with a p60, but am most interested in the main nose gear. How can we/someone get in contact w/ the designer of the nose gear.

Have a great maiden, post some video if possible.

Hi,

Those 14 pounds are gonna fly it just dandily. The first time I ever saw that plane fly on turbine power, it was on the old 8-pound FD-3 engine. It was way better than the DF performance, which was actually pretty good. You'll be fine on 14 pounds!

Anton,

Sweet looking F-18 single. Do you have any more photos of your installation? I too have the ARF in the prototype colors that I’m trying to workout the equipment and a Jetcat P-80 installation layout.
Are you planning on shooting any video of your maiden? Would love to see how the prototype color scheme looks in flight.

Shaun,
Do you need to do any modifications or strengthening of any formers on the single ARF?

Anyone who wants info on the RC crafter gears you can email Ed at [email protected]
I had inquired about the nose gear several months ago, but I already had the y/a nose gear, and decided to wait until after my maiden to invest in the Rc Crafters one’s

Thanks ahead of time for the help,

Steven T.

Thanks Guys,

Yep, I do plan to video the maiden and I'll be sure to post it here when I do. Thanks for the link to Ed Dobias at RC Crafters. I ended up using the yellow-aircraft mains, but Ed sells a really nice complete package..
Thats about all the pics i have right now of the equipment installation. I 'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Take Care,

Anton

Hi Anton, do you only have the RC Crafters nose strut? Why not the complete deal. I got an email today from them with pictures and they are awesome.
Are you using just the strut or the whole system with retracts included?

I would like to put them in my bird, but would like to hear any coments or mods needed.

Good luck in your maiden.

Thanks,

Michel...

Michel,

The nose strut/ actuator assembly is from RC Crafters. I went with the Yellow Main gear , since I already had it. The retract units are Yellow. The install is very straightforward.... a direct replacement.. As Shaun Evans would say, just be sure to grind some flat spots on the wires for the set-screws.
Yes, Ed Dobias's scale gear for the F-18 is really nice. He will even set the spring tension on the mains depending on your expected all up weight.

But could it be posible to use the yellow retract with the RC Crafters struts???

Another thing, what about weight? Are they much heavier. I know you have a Jetcat 120 so not a big issue there, I have a Wren 54 wich will give 14lbs of thrust.

Hi,

Steve, no mods necessary for sensible turbine flight. I've flown it all-out with a P-80, so that's as much as I can vouch for. It's a pretty tight fit, installation-wise, but quite doable.

As far as the RC-Crafters struts go, I'd love a set if they were a little more affordable. Don't have him adjust the spring tension higher, though! The last thing you want is for these mains to want to push the plane up. You only want enough tension on them to straighten out the leg when the bird lifts off. Otherwise, you're in for one hell of a wingtip dance when the plane starts to get light on the mains on takeoff and landings.

I'll keep that in mind Shaun. Thanks for the tip.
