Default Wings flexing in flight on 40%: normal??

OK, just wondering if any of you guys flying 40% models ever notice if your wings flex when pulling (or pushing). Now, I'm asking for replys from individuals whe have purposely looked for this, because if you never looked for it you probably never noticed it.

I'm flying a 37% Aeroworks Extra 300L (118" wingsan) and I notice deflection on both positive & negative exits. I fly IMAC primarily. I have a heavy wall 48" long aluminum tube. The wings have fiberglass cloth between the foam and the balsa sheeting and are very stiff when handling off of the model. I'm not to concerned because I've pulled hard many time with no problems, but it just gives you a funny feeling when you see the wings smiling at you!

As far as I know it's normal. Have a buddy help you lift the plane by the wingtips to check balance and you'll see the wings flex. Happens on my smaller 35% Extra with blade spars as well.

You can't lift any 35% or larger model by the wingtips from what I've seen.

It says in QQ's instuctions lift it up by the tips to do the CG, but the wings flex and it makes me nervous, but o well, QQ said so (102" though) It held up very well in flight with some 3D tumbles and such

I have noticed it on different 35% airplanes I have had. Haven't had a 40% but I am sure they are about the same. Not that they move much but you can see them flex just a little in hard G stuff.

Balanced my 40% Comp-Arf by the wingtips.

I'm not familiar with Comp-ARFs. I imagine they would be stiffer than built-up models.

Flex is normal, as is balancing by wingtip. I have balanced everything up to 40% Cardens using this method. There is no reason a wing should not hold its weight on its wingtips. In flight, the loads are far greater on the wings than staticallly.

Composite wings are going to be a lot stiffer than built up wings (in most cases).

If you hear creaking or get excessive flex then I would be concerned.

I have seen built up wings flex while lifting the plane by the wingtips...... FOAM WINGS should not flex or have so little flex that you can't see it when lifting the plane by the wingtips. Not only is the foam fairly rigid, but the balsa sheeting added to the foam with the grain running the span of the wing makes it even more rigid. There will be some flex in flight with any type of wing, but it should still be very little.

To minimize flex get a carbon fiber wing tube. That is the only real thing you can do to stiffen them up and boy will it ever do it. I have noticed big planes do it on things like walls and etc as that is about the nastiest move you can do at least load wise on a set of wings anyway. A carbon tube will minimize this. On 33% and down it will completely stop it and may on some 40%. It would depend on construction.

Man, I've tried picking up many 35% and a few 40% models by the wingtips and they all flex to the point where I never get the wheels off the ground. I swear something will break first.

On my Aeroworks, the wings flex more than I've seen on any other model that I can recall. Now that I know it does it, I look for it and it almost is becoming a distraction when I fly.

That's why I put the carbon strips in the 42% edge wings before I sheeted them. I definately could see the wings flex on my Aeroworks 40% edge...Jonas

A 747 Wing will flex 22 feet... IN EACH DIRECTION under normal flight loads. Don't sweat the flex, its a good thing they do a little.

Call aeroworks and see what they say...I am sure they will know if it is normal for this plane, and what to look for if a fix is needed.
