Default Sheeting Built-up Wings.

Do you generally find it easier to sheet a built-up wing with one single piece built from several sheets, or individual sheets applied one at a time? I am talking on a fairly large wing panel such as a 1/5 warbird.

All of the built up wings I have sheeted, the directions say to make one large sheet and use that verses laying smaller sheets up by themselves.

If you use one piece of sheeting be extra careful. If it warps you are stuck with it. By using several pieces of sheeting you can correct any tendency to warp as you go along. One of the problems with sheeting with strips or individual pieces is trying to find pieces that are the same degree of hardness. If you have wood of various densities you still have the option of placement to prevent warping.

If you make up a large sheet from several sheets first, you can sand both sides flat. You can sand one side to a fine finish and then apply it to the wing. Now the sheeting will be ready for glass or covering with minimal sanding. This will prevent thinning of the sheeting over the ribs and give a smoother result.
