Default After Run Oil and WD40

I read somewhere that you can use wd40 as after run oil, and it works perfectly. I read on another site that you can use standard 3-in-1 oil and wd40. Is this true? or was this just people talking s**t. I know after run oil is cheap but its the inconvenience of going to my "local" hobby shop, which is 20 miles away, just to get after run oil, when i have gallons of possible alternatives at home.

cheers

p.s. my revo should be here on monday!!!!

I use WD40...easier to get that little nozzle into the glow plug hole without knockin dirt is than it is with an afterrun oil bottle

hugh, i wash my air filters...well....pretty much never, lol. i inspect em once in a while, and if they look too dirty, i clean em.

what i usually do with a NEW engine though, is put a few drops of afterrun in both the carb and glow plug hole before firing it up for the first time, since i'm paranoid about friction.

i use wd40 when i clean the engine, a lil' squirt in the carb and then spin the enigine for 5-10sec(once in a while). but i usually put a few drop of after-run-oil after a run session, 2drops in carb, 2drops in glow hole and turn flywheel a few time. then i put my truck away til next run.

And I thought I wasn't using enough...I put in a good squirt in the carb and yank the pull starter several times (this is on a RC10GT) and then sometimes, I take out the plug and put in another good squirt. [X(] Also, every once in a while, I put in so much after run oil that the engine gets hydro-locked ...oh well, at least its protected!

when you say put a few drops in the carb, do you disconnect the fuel line, and unscrew the carb needle? or do you just pit the oil in where the fuel goes in?

You just pop off the air filter and put a few drops down the neck of the carb. No need to go unscrewing needles. Its all going o the same place !

And be sure to put your air filter back on or cap off the carb neck with something after you put in the afterun oil (or WD40). If not you'll get dust and junk down in there.

cheers, but do you disconnect the fuel line? when people say "spin the engine for 10 seconds" what happens if it starts?

Well, you should always completely drain the tank and fuel lines before you put the truck up after a bash session. SO drain all of the fuel out of the tank and then start the truck and let it run till it dies. That will burn off all the fuel in the lines and the carb. Then pop out the glow plug and put in the AR oil in the cylinder and the carb neck. Then spin the engine. I usually spin the engine with the plug out. No way it could possibly start then.

cheers lummer, and everyone else. i had a traxxas nitro sport for years, and before i joined this forum, there was no one i could ask these questions to. I have never used after run oil. Although my nitro sport has only had about 20 hours of light use. My sessions got interupted all the time by silly problems i didnt know how to fix, so i came home and shoved the truck under my bed until i got a chance to take it out again. Anyways, im taking it more seriously now that i know a bit more. I stripped my engine and ordered a few replacement parts, i ordered a revo, and about £60 (around $110) of bits and pieces such as lots of glow plugs, two 3000mah batteries and chargers, after run oil, air filter oil etc. I can't wait, my revo should be here tomorrow, and parts for my nitro sport should be here in a few days!!!

Btw stuff is about twice as expensive over here. A new stock revo is about £450 ($850)

Anyway sorry for that insane ramble but im so excited!!!

hee hugh

I know the problem of the feeling you pay way too much for the parts you want. A simple stock replacement arm costs here €13=$15...
It's a bit strange because I should think if the € is worth more than $ it is suppost to be cheaper to import parts. But the European taxes are the highest on the planet...
But I found a relative cheap parts supplier who also ships to the UK.You should check the site : http://www.the-border.nl/home.php?cat=242 (i dont if it is allowed to post this, if it is removed give me a pm)
I ordered a few parts at their shop. It got delivered the next day. the handling fee is a bit expensive (€6) but if you order a lot it is doable....
and about the WD-40. in the manual and DVD of your ordered Revo they discribe perfectly how to use it....I use it also and never had a problem with the engine.

My thoughts on ARO:
If you buy hobby grade ARO you are wasting money. WD-40 works perfectly, and is actually what traxxas reccomends. Personally I prefer a 50-50 mix of automatic transmission fluid and marvel mystery oil (What O.S. recomends)

I usually try to avoid putting ARO in the carb as the oils can prematurely deteriorate the o-rings, but it is what traxxas recomends so I'm sure it probably doesn't accelerate the deterioration too much. Also, the nitro fuel has all kinds of petrol based lubes in it which would have the same affect on the rings. They do tell you to put the oil in with the slide held open, I assume this is so it goes down to the crank rather than having it seep all through the carb. The only time I drop ARO in the carb is when I'm bashing in rain, or through streams or puddles. But usually when I run in a lot of water I actually completely tear down and flush my engine, I just drop the ARO in until I have time for a tear down, and when I run through water I will generally fill the engine with ARO and let it sit until I have time to tear it down.

I also like to use Morgan Sidewinder fuel which claims that you do not need ARO at all if you run it. I still use ARO if the trucks are getting shelfed for more than a few days, but when I'm getting out to run almost every day, I don't even bother with ARO, and I never have any corrosion inside of my engines.
