Default Unhappy with O.S. 18TM in Revo

I recently installed the OS18TM in my Revo, I initally had starting problems but now its starts and purrs like a kitten. I am speed freak, and for some reason its just not fast. I have even tried leaning it out to as little as 1 and half turns out from closed. It just doesnt pick up speed, it takes forever to get to to second gear and all these wheelies I kept hearing about just don't happen. I never ran the 2.5r past break in so I can't really compare the 2, but I was really hoping for something faster. My other truck is the HPI MT and I have a 0S 18 CVRX in there and it SCREAMS!! Is it unrealist to expect similiar speeds from the 2 cars given the differnt weights etc. I thought the engines would offset that. Can anyone think of what I could be doing wrong? I followed the break-in procedures to the book. When I lean it out, it gives off a strong smell and the sound of the engine sounds weird, so I am very worried about running it that lean. I only have about 15 tanks through it, will the performance get better as I run more tanks through it?

I just recently put the OS 18 TM in my Revo and it's a huge improvment over the 2.5. Mine does wheelies easily. I have less than 10 tanks in it. Including the break in tanks.

sounds like you need to retune. that motor screams and should have plenty of power. should put you on your lid on a full throttle punch

MY .18TM ran great in my revo...Fast & would flip on it's lid....I'd try retuning it.
Now when my revo was stock with the 2.5 in it I had the same problems...It just wouldnt run worth a crap. But when I took the reverse out an installed a FOC kit it ran like a different truck. If you havent done that yet get a FOC kit, for the moeny it's one of the best upgrades you can get for the Revo....
OS engines are really great, infact I just got my new OS.18TZ in for my Revo, gonna break it in this weekend.

just becasue you lean it doesnt mean more power. it can also mean overheating power loss and shorter engine life. do you know how to tune? just wondering. how did you break it in? what fuel are you using? is your airfilter clean?

Wow I am way off, I thought for sure that leaning it made it go faster. I broke it in on 20% Blue Thunder. I just broke down and took it in the Hobby Shop, He is working onit now, he said he think its stuck in second gear thats why such low peformance, Anyhow hes gonna tune it and get me rolling agin.

I would look at the slipper adjustment as well as resetting your engine back to factory setting. If your slipper is too loose then it won't shift into second and you will also have alot less power to the wheels so no wheelies. This is just a guess as I know O.S. .18 is plenty fast and has tons of power.

I have never seen one but I have read where people have put them in. I have one I am going to put in my HPI MT Racer shortly.

This is the first thread on any form where some one was not happy with TM that I have seen. OS makes great engines. I have always had great luck with mine.

mauth, thanks for the info.
I'm actually curious because I'm getting the itch for a revo.
Due to all of my friends and my brother having monster trucks, I may sell or trade the hyper for a revo. Don't get me wrong, I love my car and engine. But it would be a little more fun if I was on the same page as others around me.

I've got the OS.18 TZ in my Revo...I just put it in the other day, I havent even had a chance to break it in yet. If I get a chance I'll take some pics of it this week.

Let us know what you think about the TZ! Like I said I have one to put in my truck but have some things I want to do to it before I do. It is going in something else besides a Revo.

I've had a TM and TZ and now a TNT Modded TZ on the way for the MT Nationals in Dallas. I love the OS motors.

I've heard good things about tnt mods. I also ran across another company www.ebmods.com. But I heard they're around 35.00 more expensive the tnt. Does anyone have experience with this company?

There is also RB mods, just to confuse you even more

Back to the topic, I had similar problems with my OS 18tm engine recently. I was very dissapointed with the performance, seemed my ported and polished 2.5R engine had more power. Then I started from factory settings again on the 18tm and am stunned at how easily this engine flips the truck. Seemed I had my HSN too lean, with my LSN way too fat. Caused good temps, but no low speed power. I get rolling wheelies now, and rips out patches of grass if I hit the throttle too hard

Thanks mauth...I'm glad you enjoy them.

Capital Bulldogs, reset your needles back to the factory settings and retune it. You probably have the same problem that Nex2Stupid had. Here are the factory settings:
- High Speed Needle (Needle Valve) 2-1/2 turns out from closed
- Mid Range Needle (Mixture Control Valve) Screw head is exactly 1/2 turn in from flush with the carb body (pg 22 of manual)
- Low Speed Needle (Metering Needle) Screw head flush with ball link body (pg 22 of manual).

The TZ is quite an improvement over the TM but does requirement some changes to get it in the Revo. OS claims a 10% gain in power over the TM...it may not sound like much but with these little engines it is a noticeable difference.

Here is a write up I did on how to install the TZ in a Revo...the only change is you dont need a new mount, the newer TZ engines dont have the fins on the bottom of the block. If you can find a TM header or Trinity Pipe, it will have more power than the HPI header. Let me know if you have questions.

i would like to use my ez start for now with the tz if i bought a tz with slide carb and put a tm crank in it with the tm backplate do you think that would fly? then i could use all the stock cltch components. it would be cheaper to do that than to buy a tm and put the new tz piston and sleeve and the turbo head.

You would have to buy the TM crank and backplate...the TM only has 3 ports in the block and the TZ has 5...change the TM to a TZ sleeve wouldn't do a thing.
