Model Storage Ideas
I, like many people in this hobby have several planes that I fly. What do some of you do for storing your planes? Do you hang them on the wall, from the ceiling? Box them up? Chuck them in the attic? I need to find a better storage solution than just leaning everything against the wall. Pics would be a great help.
Thx and take care.

RE: Model Storage Ideas
Scott: I use two methods to store my models. One is to cut heavey duty wire coat hangers in the middle of the crossbar and bend the two tips into a "U" shape then cover the tips with a cushioning material (fuel tubing works great). I then hang the model by the horizonal stab from a nail or whatever. You can also hang them by the prop or langing gear. You use any bendable wire that is stiff enough to retain the "U" shape.
I store wings on a rack made from the slotted shelving backets that you can buy at any hardware or home supply store. I buy the longest brackets I can get, gting off the litttle retaining knobs at the tips and the cover with 1 inch foam pipe insulation.
I have some biplanes that I do not like to take apart, I store them on ceiling mounted brackets made from 1 1/2 in. PVC pipe made into a "U" shape with one side of the "U" screwed to the ceiling joists. I usually space the two "U"s just inside the top cabanes struts.
Sorry I don.t have photos, but my digiatl camera is kaput and I've spent my money on models and supplies (-:

RE: Model Storage Ideas
For the Wings;
I make a rack out of two pieces of 2" x 4" x 4' (hung vertically) and some 1/2" dowling,
Drill 1/2" holes every 6-8" in the 2 x 4s (either strait in or on a slight angle)
Cut the dowling into 18" lengths and tap them into the holes in the 2 x 4s.
Screw the 2 x 4s onto the wall spaced 2 -3 ' apart, making sure that the dowels line up.
You can now stack the wings on this 'Coat Rack' style storage device.
For the Fuses;
I do much the same thing but I use heavier dowels and increase the space between them.
Pipe insulating foam can also be used.

In the above photo, you can kind of see the Home Depot shelving brackets mounted to studs with various length metal shelf T's attached at various to support wings and fuses. Some of the fuses have to go on the side due to the tail spans, and wings need gear up to get more space. I've even got two building tables set up. Too bad it's always a mess with stuff I'm building.

dont know how to post pictures here but here is what i did in my basement, i used 1" pvc with caps glued on the end of the verticles, dropped down and put tee's every so far apart with 1" bars sticking out horizontal with pipe insulation on them for a wing rack. i hung this from the floor joists above by placing galvanized pipe clamps just below the glued caps and nailed these into the floor joists so far i have three wings on this rack. I left the bottom of the last set of tee's open so i can add more to it in the future

RE: Model Storage Ideas
i have used the dubro rack for about 17 years have two of them to store at least eight wings out of the way.the fuselages i hank from the ceilig with eybolts ant twine with an s hook for easy removal.i could store the fuselage on the racks but only have wall space for two racks.i have some pegboard mounted to the walls and mount the transmitters with peg board hooks through the carring handles for storage and charging.used a bead of hot glue on each side of the hooks so they have no tendency to come loose.to prevent scrathes you can dip them a couple of times in plisti-dip

I have a wing rack on a wall, 3/8" dowels inserted into a couple of 1x1s at an angle and then screwed into the garage joists. The plane rack is made of 3/4 and 1 schedule 40 plastic piping with appropriate dowls inserted in the horizontal members to prevent any sagg.

You might consider killing two birds with one stone. thoes birds would be storage and transportation.
I have it wired for 110. I plug in at home for charging in the trailer. And have a deep cycle 12v battery for at the field.

Sorry I forgot to add that...... 6'5" X11.5' V nose
I haul 2 28% areobats and 1 25% cub fuselages on the floor 2 profiles in the front and the rest of the collection on the racks. The front cabnet holds the flight boxes fuel cans folding chairs.....ect.

RE: Model Storage Ideas
I had to change when I moved but years I made a rack out of tow pieces 2 x 2" lumber with 1/2 dowels. Longer ones for wings and shorter ones for the fuselages. I didn't want to screw it to the wall so I got an idea from a old pole lamp. I drilled about 6" long holes in the end of a 2 x2 and inserted a piece of pipe with a spring in it. A chair leg cap over the pipe protected the ceiling. It was sturdy enough to hold planes floor to ceiling.

Although you do get strange looks when you check out with 30' of pipe but also 20 ells, 15 tees, 6 crosses and 8 caps.
Lowes does have some nice heavy 10, 8 and 6" double prong 1/4z' peg board fittings with about a 10 or 15 degree angle. 1/2 PVC with 3/4" insulation slips right over them.
