Default 46% Ultimate Hangar 9

Hi there...

I have just bought a Hangar 9 Ultimate kit...
but the landing gear is missing. (it is not brand new kit!!!)

I have heard that the original landing gear can delaminate!!!

What is the best solution ??? Duro-aluminium???
And where can I buy this???

To all other Hangar 9 ultimate owners:
- Was your covering also VERY bad???
- Where did you get your spinner???

I have a Hangar 9 Sukhoi and that is perfeckt!!!

The landing gear is pretty stout for a carbon gear. I know tru turn makes a 6" and so does pete model carbon fiber. If you want a replacement aluminum gear, tnt landing gear makes a set.

The landing gear is pretty stout for a carbon gear. You can get a replacement set from horizon hobby for $160. I know tru turn makes a 6" spinner and so does pete model carbon fiber. If you want a replacement aluminum gear, tnt landing gear makes a set but they are $135-$150 a set.

I would go with the replacement carbon gear, its very strong as the design of their carbon gears are superior to graphtechs carbon gear. Plus, its a bit lighter. I would imagine if you are flying models of that calibur that landings will not be a problem. Also, the carbon fiber spinner will save you a good bit of weight as well.

FWIW-- I make my own gear -from 6061T6 -most of the time .
For this size model Isimply refuse to use any CF stuff - I have on plane with CF gear now - a Showtime 4D
Frankly the weight savings over a well selected aluminum gear -ain't much and CF in this size has very poor ability to take up a large load by spreading and recovering - Typically they simply don't deflect or they delaminate.
The aluminum required to make a typical set of gear - from local aluminum sales --$5.00 That is a 24" long, 3/16" thick , 2" wide piece - Aluminum -like most metals is sold by the pound.

What is 6061T6???

I dont have any experience with Carbon gear, I have aluminium on all my Giant scale models...
The problem is also i dont have the original gear, so I can compare size...

But if some one could help me with the dimension??? (for the Hangar 9 ultimate)
then I will try to find out if I can get the aluminium here in Denmark (and some one to cut it !!!???)

6061T6 is the grade or quality of aluminum. This is the kind of aluminum that is vastly used in full scale aviation as it is of high quality and relatively cheap. I used to purchase all the metals used in a small company that produces kit planes [link=http://dreamaircraft.com/v2.0/]Dream Aircraft[/link] and 6061T6 is about 4$/lb. You can also get 2024T3 which is VERY expensive but it is the grade used for building the spars and all critical components of the plane. This is strong aluminum.

Design your own ger -It is very easy
for that model a track of 24" is fine
for prop clearance with model blocked up level -provide at least 4"
draw two parallel lines - on the table- spaced apart by the distance from gear mounting plate - to bottom of wheel on ground
this gives height of gear
then draw a centered line -width of landing gear mounting plate, on upper line . (probably 12")
the bottom line will be 22" long (for 24" wide track.)
Finally:connect shorter upper line to lower line to provide angles of each leg.
Measure around the lines to get length of material rquired -(something over 36" likely)
Purchase , 1/4" thick 2" wide 6061 T6 OR 3/16" thick 2024 T3 OR 7075 T6
Make certain the surface grain of the piece runs along the 36" length -DO NOT use aluminum cut with the surface grain going the other way.
once the shape is cut (2" at top 1" at bottom of legs) you can bend it yourself.
clamp center solidly to a heavy work table .
slide a rectangular steel tube (bending arm)over the leg - to within 1"' of clamp at end of mounting section.

Simply pull straight up on the bending arm. to a little over 45 degrees
turn the piece around and repeat other leg.
This will give a radiused bend, unlikely to crack.
Compare and correct as needed.
make final wheel mounting bend at ends as needed.
Make the gear such that the wheels hang cambered IN at bottom and only set vertical under full loads.
I make all my gear -using 7075T6 on very light (under 11 lb models)
2024 T3-4 on next size up models but if I am out of that -I go to 6061 -
Most commercial benders will not supply 2024 or 7075- too expensive for them and requires better bending procedures to radius bends.
3/16 2024T3 will make excellet gear for 40 lb models - dun it -

Hello again

How do you balance a bi-plane... ???
The most correct position must be the centerline of the plane???

It must not be accurate, if you do it on the upper or lower wing...

Yes- consider the planform of aircraft-look at total exposed area, in this view..

Actually, the general rule of thumb is to measure from the leading edge of the top wing to the trailing edge of the bottom wing and consider that the chord. Center section i believe. then measure 25-33% of the chord for CG. generally. since most bipes are staggered, this gets one into the ballpark. it could depend on sweep too, i forget. havent had to do that in years..
