Spektrum is a great thing to have. But the DX3 is not that advanced, so I think you would do better with a 3PK or a M8/M11 and buying Spektrum for one of these. But it depends upon whether you have use for the advanced functions or not. Furthermore you should try to hold the tx's first and feel which you prefer.

I agree with Engrose about holding them, I found the M11 to be a little top heavy for my likings so I went with the 3PK. I got the Spektrum module with it and so far this thing has been fantastic. It has everything anyone could ever need, whether you are a weekend basher or a serious racer, this radio has it all. So obviously I voted 3PK...but yeah, go to your LHS and get the feel for both of them, they are both great radios.

Look at the Nomad Sensor 2.4Ghz system instead.

That way you also get Real Time Telemetrics (RX Voltage, Drive Battery Voltage(For elektro), Engine or Battery Temp and Speed [when Speed sensor is released])

I have the Sensor and I am surprised at the facilities and how easy it is to use.

There is a Loooong Sensor thread with lots of details in this Forum.

One of the biggest advantages(IMO) of the Sensor when compared to other high end radios, is that it is upgradable.
You don't need to buy a new radio, if you finds out that you would like some new functions.
You can ask the maker, and if the functions you are looking for makes sence and is doable, then they release a new software for the Radio.

They also have a support forum, where their Engineers participate actively. http://support.nomadio.net

THat will be the BIGGEST mistake you can make...those are the Megatech version of the 3PK...Futaba WILL NOT WARRANTEE them......when it comes to quality electronics spend the extra dough and get a new store bought one or at least make sure you are'nt buy ing the Megatech version.....everyone I know who did that has a great 260 paper weight now

I beleive that most manufacturers whose products end up on Ebay no longer honour the warranty. I used to work for Sony and whenever anyone had problems with stuff they bought "new" or slightly used, still in warranty on Ebay, and needed in warranty repairs, they were S.O.L. Maybe the online store will offer a different warranty but IMO, I agree to spend the extra cash and get one from a Hobby Shop. It may be different for other manufacturers but that's my experience.

To compare the 3PK directly to the Nomad Sensor isn't quite fair

You have to add the price for the Spektrum system to the 3PK(US$ 159.99 at Horizon Hobby)

If you also want the real Time Telemetrics, you also need to add at least one 3'rd party telemetrics module. (price $??? for Speed, Temp and battery voltage)

You might want to consider the Hitec SRX and add the Spectrum Module and receiver. The SRX has far more features than the DX3 and sells for about $100 for the TX and RX only. The Spekrum add on is about $150.

Here's the info: http://www.hitecrcd.com/Radios/AggressorSRX.htm

At the track I drive, over half of the people use the Hitec CRX. The only reasons I didn't was mainly that I needed a lefthand tx and that I like to not have the same as everybody else.

If you get a Hitec CRX or SRX, then you get the spektrum module designed for Hitec. Likewise with a 3PK or M8, just get the one designed for the specific transmitter. But as mentioned earlier, it's a very good idea to try to hold the transmitter before you buy it. You can try to go to a track and talk to people about their tx and maybe get to try them.
