How do you make a baffle?
Hey everyone.
I have a Dave Patrick 120 size ultimate. I have been told that building a baffle inside the cowl will keep the motor cooler. I have no idea what material to use. Or how to attach it to the fiberglass cowl? Can anyone help me out here? A picture or two would help me out a lot.
Thanks in advance
Shaun

I usually use .016 aluminum sheet, attach it to the cowl with Goop. What you want to do is deflect the air up and over the cylinder to the exit. If you go to Cactus Aviation's website, he has some pics of a 150 baffle set-up.

RE: How do you make a baffle?
I made my baffle out of thin balsa. I simply took a piece and soaked it in water so it would flex. I curved it the shape of the bottom of the cowl then tacked in place with CA. Then I did the same with the top piece and glued the edges together. (on mine the top of the cowl comes off so I didn't tack it to the top peice of the cowl).
Next I used thin fiberglass cloth and used epoxy and coated the inside and outside of the balsa. Trying to keep the round shape. Then I went back and hand painted it black. It was pretty simple to do and my engine has never temped over 180 even in the Vegas heat!

Well got her done. I just fabbed the box out of light balsa. I coated it with thin ca. It feels pretty strong and it seems pretty light also.
