Default Painting Aluminum Landing Gear

What do you guys use to scuff it up? I don't want to gouge the metal. The paint I'm using is Lusterkote white primer and metallic plum.

I generally use a scotch brite pad. If the edges are rough, wet or dry sandpaper in a 220 grit will dress it up a bit. If using spray can paint as you mentioned I generally spray a coat of Zinc Oxide primer before paint. I get this from a local auto parts store that sell paint products. The can I have is made by TEMPO. It comes in a spray can, it sticks to aluminum extremely well and provides a surface for your typical spray can paint to stick to. Some paints will flake off if you flex the gear from a ruff landing, it just wont stick to the aluminum. This will not happen using a Zinc chromate or oxide primer....Walt

ScotchBrite works good, then clean with denatured alcohol before painting. Works good

Use the thinner, cleaner or just hot soapy water BEFORE you rough the surface up.

If there is any oil on the aluminum and you scuff it up, it'll get buried deep in the scratches and keep the paint or primer from working well.

Then, clean it again after scuffing.

Scanning this thread for ideas--I had one myself [img]

Has anyone ever tried covering aluminum gear legs with Monokote iron on or stick on trim to match the plane?

I've done what Walt "No Glo"suggested last season on a 35%Wildhare Extra and flew it all summer without a flake or any kind of problem.
Thanks again Walt for the tip.
