OS FL-70 Oil content.

RE: OS FL-70 Oil content.
16-17-18%/vol is where the oil content lies in most of the commercially available fuels that seem to run well in a variety of 4C engines.
Folks have run more....folks have run less. OS specifies 18% (probably a little bit of an inflated percentage since they have no control over the quality of oil you feed the motor).
Go to your hobby shop. They'll have exactly what you need.

Isn't the FL-70 the one that has the major problems with oil not travelling into the cam area? Something due to the end bearings being sealed and not shielded so it relies on lots of pressure to pass oil through it?

Hi all
I'v got a FL70 in a seagull PC9 but I take the precausion of taking the rocker box cover off after every session and dripping some castor down the push rod tubes and then leaving the engine upright to get the oil down to the cam, I have not had any trouble with mine in 20hrs of flying, just a suggestion.

I have a brand new OS FL-70. I'm not going to baby it one bit. I'll treat the same way that I treat my other engines, with care and doting attention, but I won't baby it.
If it breaks, it goes back to OS for warranty work (the importers actually). They will need to know what happened so that they can communicate with OS/Japan. I doubt there will be any problems. If so, they are really going to get tired of hearing from me. <G>

RE: OS FL-70 Oil content.
Here are some pictures of my engine.
I bought is about 1 year ago. Ran 2 tanks through it, and put it on the shelf.
Today I ran half a gallon though it in my cessna with Daytona 14% synth oil 2% castor oil 1% nitro. 13/6 APC prop
It actualy runs ok, even with hardly any nitro. It wil idle slower than my 2 strokes. Forgot the tach at home, so no numbers.
The high speed needle is very sensitive with so little nitro, so you have to get it just right.
Surface rust has atacked the crank and cam shaft to a mild degree.

RE: OS FL-70 Oil content.
Looks rather typical for a used four stroke. Goes to show that they will corrode on low nitro about the same as they do on high nitro?
Looks like it has plenty of oil around the cam and rocker arms?
Notice the comment about lack of needle spread with the low nitro? Might be something to remember some hot day when you cannot get your needles set?
Enjoy,
Jim

RE: OS FL-70 Oil content.
I had an FL-70 in a Sig Rascal 40. I got 76 flights out of it prior to crashing it last weekend. I ran 15% Byron Fuels with 18% oil (synthetic blend). I had no problems with this motor at all and it still runs fine. The only real problem is the two piece muffler (it's crimped end).

About a year ago, I ran it on 10% nitro before i shelfed it.......so maybe that has caused it to corrode.
I would say that there is enough oil to lube the rocker arms and cam. Nothing is dry.
It was quite cold today. 5C og 41F

Hi Sonic
Fancy seeiing you here
I have an OS70FL with about 40hrs on it, after reading the posts on the forum I have taken to taking the rocker cover off after every session and dripping castor down the pushrod tubes and then leaving the engine upright to drain the castor down to the cam, no wear is apparant at the moment, castor being a little thicker stays in the cam box better than a synthetic and does not seem to migrate to the engine or exhast, anyway there is not burnt residue on the exhast.

I dont plan on lubricating the engine extra......lets see how it holds up. Otherwise ill have to buy a much cheaper ASP engine, that I know lasts a long time

RE: OS FL-70 Oil content.
Hard to say because of the copious amount of oil on the crank counter weight, but I am not sure that is rust. You would have to wipe away the oil and maybe even put it in a crock pot to be sure, but that looks like that could be oil stains to me. Omega and some other red dyed fuels tend to leave a red brown stain when the cook on hot parts. I think the color is a combination of varnished castor oil and the red dye.

I just picked up my second FL-70 last night. I've burning Cool Power 15%
in my first for about a year. Great little engines! It's been perfect for my
Dazzler ARF!
