First Place 1.3 engine(corr)
Greetings,
I am asking for feedback from users with experience with the First Place 1.3 engine. If you wish, comments may be posted here, or sent to: .
Comments will help me in choosing the engine for my GP Curtiss P6-E. The model size, ruggedness, and need for nose weight suggest consideration of a gas engine. I have at this time A BUSA Fokker D-VIII with a Zenoah G-26, and A GP Giant Ugly Stick with a Zenoah G-23. Both are excellent, however the First Place has an excellent Muffler, electronic ignition, and it a bit lighter.
Thanks for any help,
Jim

RE: First Choice 1.3 engine
I hope you mean First Place Engines. I have 3 of the 1.3 First Place engines. They light weight, easy starting, dependable, and easy on fuel. I am running 15-8 Bamula props and APC 16-6 props. I have one on a Kangke Monocoupe 60 and one on a H9 Ultra Stick 60. You can use them anywhere you would use a .91 to 1.20 4 stroke engine.

Not personally. I know people that do own them and I know the guy that builds them. All I can say is that I have never heard anybody complain about one and they seem to run very nice.

Richard, The total weight including the wrap-around muffler, ignition system, ignition switch, and ignition battery (750 mah NMH) is 42 ounces. I use a micro servo and mount it on the firewall and only run a 10 ounce fuel tank to keep weight down. Here are the specs from Sig.

In your opinion how does the G23 compare with the FPE 1.3, as I've heard that the Zenoah is quite a bit stronger than the FPE in the power department.

Now you've done it...I was gonna keep my mouth shut, but you're making me laugh First we make both engines the same....
The FPE 1.3 lists for $449.95...Advertised thrust is 10 lbs with a 16x8 prop @7400...This number must have come from the ThrustHp chart, notoriously inaccurate...Weight is advertised as 43.2 oz, with muffler.
Since the G23 is no longer sold, we have to use a G26, same physical dimensions...They turn a 18-6 prop at 9000 rpm, way more thrust that the FPE...The weight is about the same...
A G26 costs $425...My ignition has a lifetime guarantee, does Ridge ?
My ignition will run for at least 2 hours on a 500 ma battery...Does the Ridge ?
I straightened an FPE 1.3 a while back, and tested it...It's a nice little engine, not in the same league as a G23, let alone a G26....
Ask Karolh about his converted G23

Not to steal any thunder from the original post, but I only asked the question out of sheer curiosity as my RCIGN1 converted G23 & Abell muffler at 44 ozs. is a serious ***** kicker, and spins its APC 17x6 @ 9, 200 max. which equates to approx 12 lbs of thrust.
If ever there was a keeper engine, this is it, as each time I run it, it just gets better. Talk about quality workmanship and stellar performance, this baby has it all.
I guess it might get a bit monontonus for you folks to hear 'us' continuously raving about our Ralph converted engines, but truthfully, you have to try one to really understand.
Ralph, thanks for making a nice little engine into a great little engine....nuff said.

RE: First Place 1.3 engine(corr)
Karol, your question was "how does the G23 compare with the FPE 1.3". You didn't mention a hopped up version that has had the ignition system changed, muffler changed, and weight reduced. I know the G23 is not sold by the distributor any more and has been replaced by the G26. I was comparing them as they were sold new and as out of the box in new condition, not altered in any way. I have a new in box G23 that has never seen fuel with the original ignition and the original chain saw type muffler and it weighs 61 ounces, over a pound more than my FPE 1.3 that is all original. Granted, Zenoah has a good reputation, but I can take my FPE out of the box and put it to use without any extra modifications. That is why my G23 has been sitting in a box for 6 years and will probably remain there.

I must chime in had a FPE 1.3 what a pice Of #### i screwwed with the fuel, timing best i could do was 7.5 # thrust on way to many props to mention, best Rpm was 6500. got take sides with RCIGN1. had to pull it from my sea fury and put a brison 2.4 i sold it on e bay for 300.00 Wheew ||||| you are better of with a 120 os Fs or someting close to that rather than pay that much for so little thrust,

RE: First Place 1.3 engine(corr)
Somebody buys an ECHO 1.3cc weedeater, takes the magneto ignition off, makes a prop hub, machines the case for it, buys an ignition system from D&B engines and puts it in a box for sale..
I buy a G23, take the magneto ignition off, make a prop hub, use the stock crankcase, make an ignition system, and put it in a box for sale...It is not hopped up, it just runs better than the Echo..WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE ????
Try buying an Echo weedeater out of a box and putting on an airplane, without modifications..

I was not attempting to compare my engine's performance with that of a FPE, but was just advising you of what my engine does, which in my humple opinion is not a hopped up engine, as it's mechanical state has not been altered in any way, but see it as an improved engine.
However, if that's your point of view then most all our engines are hopped up versions as they started life in a totallly different state, but have been extensively modified to suit our modelling needs.

I have repeated my original request. Please note that I in NO WAY requested a comparison of the FPE 1.3 with any other engine, stock or modified.
I had then, as I have now, reasons for being interested in the FPE. These reasons are in no way concerned with squeezing the max RPM fron a 1.3 to 1.58 cui engine.
Constructive replies to my request have given me the info that I asked for-I have since ordered a FPE 1.3 engine. In general, I avoid merchandise that promotes its' own value by smearing a competitor.

Show me where I "smeared" a competitor....Read my first post, replying to what looks more like a "smear" to Zenoah
Only engine company I ever "smeared" was A&M, they deserved it by continuing to sell engines when they knew thair cranks were junk....[8D]
I guess "nice little engine" is a smear
