Default Need Expert Help With A Saito Engine Installation

I have a question for you. I have just installed a Saito FA-40a on a Model Tech Extra 300. Everything is coming together nicely, except for one thing. I noticed that the fuel tank is 1/2” to 5/8” higher than the spray bar one the Saito. I am assuming this is going to be a big problem for me. I have been told that the tank needs to be equal or slightly lower than the fuel tank brass plumbing on my tank. What do you suggest I do? This plane will have a cowl, so I cannot move the engine. I was wondering if I should try and buy another fuel tank (maybe even smaller), so the rubber stopper will sit lower. Right now the plane comes with a 7oz. tank. I could go with maybe a 6oz tank. Do you think this is necessary to allow the engine to run correctly? I posted some pics. In picture #4, I am pointing to the area on the carburetor that I measured from to get the 1/2” to 5/8”. This is where the spray bar is located. I hope I measured that correctly.

If I cannot get the tank lower, will I need to install a perry pump?

Thanks guys for all your help,

Jose (aka Bullseye)

Bullseye, I would run it like it is. It may run fine since it is that close. I don't think you will have losts of extra power though. After reading through your post again it isn't clear if you are talking about tank center line or not. As long as you are pointing to where the centerline of tank is you will be fine. Tank center line and spray bar alignment is very important but can be off a little but not a lot.

You should not have any problem with the carb where it is....if the carb is way
higher than the tank you could have problems.

With the engine on a diagonal will help on startup as the fuel might not be as prone to collect directly on the plug as an engine mounted at the 6 oclock position. I can tell you have good intelegence by the brand of engine you chose. Saito is the best and can't be beaten period.

There might be a little variance in the way the engine runs when inverted compared with upright.

Enjoy,

Jose,

The focal point in a fuel tank, that must be positioned at the same level as the carburettor spray-bar, with the model in level flight attitude, is not the fuel tank's plumbing, or brass tubes.

It is the fuel tank's center-line.

Some tanks have their plumbing positioned at different levels, from the center-line, like Sullivan slant tanks, for example.

So it is the center-line level, which determines this, irrespective of where the fuel actually exits the tank.

Well, it looks like there is no way to drop the tank. I guess I am gonna have to either fly it the way it is and if it does not perform correctly, I will have to try and fit a Perry Pump in there. I hope I don't have to do the latter.

I am very happy with Saito engines. I got rid of all but one 2- stroke engine. I just love the way the Saitos perform.

Thanks alot guys,

Jose (aka Bullseye)

Jose,

Try it and see what you have before you change to a pump.

Enjoy,

Jim

Jose:

The Saitos usually have very good fuel draw, so once the engine is running it most likely will be fine. The problem will be a tendency to flood on starting. If you make it past that everything should be fine.

Enjoy the engine and the plane.

Bill.
