Hello:

We are building a 16 ft. wing span Telemaster fun fly and had hopes of being in the mid 40 lb. range but construction is far enough along that it looks like we will hit the low to mid 50 lb. range. What size gas engine do you think will get the job done.

Please keep in mind this is not a aerobatic plane but a high lift Sunday flyer. It has a lifting stab which gives a total of 43.3 sq. ft. of lifting area and will be somewhere around the low 20 oz. to sq. ft. wing load. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Hi,

A G-62 will be plenty of engine for fairly calm conditions. At 55 lbs with 22 sq ft of wing, your wing loading will be 40 oz/sq ft but large planes fly better so the plane will fly like it has a wing loading of 25-30 oz/sq ft.

If you have doubts, add flaps. I had one as a research plane with flaps and a 140 cc engine. At 75 lbs with the flaps down 15 degrees, the plane had a 10 ft roll before airborne.

We have 43.3 sq. Ft. of wing area and will be around 20 to 24 oz. per sq. ft. of wing load. We do have flaps also. Based on your past plane we may be ok.

Hi,

Sorry I mis-read your post about a 16 ft wingspan. I was assuming a 12 ft wing span. Your plane will be a floater and your power may be marginal due to the high frontal drag from that long wing. I would not fly it on a windy day or you may not get it back.

Personally, with that long wing, I would increase power to at least 75 cc in an engine with the power of a 3W.

Likely need something heavy, at that kind of wing area the weight should be 75+ pounds or it will not be much fun to fly. Have some 141CC singles here that may be good candidates, big prop, big throaty sound and not too much $$. How about some images of the project?

Hi Ron,
Did you finish your Giant Telemaster? It would be nice to see some pictures. I plan to build something similar, 14' -16' wingspan, around my Quadra100 engine. Any of your expiriances would help very much. We all hope to hear from you soon. Mike

I flew a 55 lb BTE super flying king on a gt80 and it flew fine.. It was loaded down with water drop, eagletree, gps, ect, ect... Thats why it was so heavy. Considering it has a bit less wing area with its 12' wing span, I think a gt 80 on a 16' telemaster would be great. They run sweet!!!

I've flown 130 pound planes with a 100cc engine and normally fly 39 pound planes with less than 30cc engines. A 75 would do just fine with all the wing area and the airfoil type. It's still a basic or slightly modified Clark Y isn't it?
