Default Does Anybody Know Where I Can Get Blades For This?

OK guys,

Way back in 1979-80 I met a modeler from the UK that used one of these "David Planes"....plane as in wood cutting tool. Anyway, on one of his trips "over there", he brought one back for me. I have been using it ever since. The gadget works much better than the "razor planes" that everyone else sells. I guess that trick is in the blade...thicker and more rigid that a razor blade but thin enough to do some awesome planing. It has "Made in Holland" on it but I guess they were popular in the UK. Does anybody know where I can get replacement blades?...................That's right, 26 years and I'm now just on the last of my five original blades!

Tailwinds,

John

I did a quick Google on this and came up with:

http://www.skykingrcproducts.com/acc...zor_plane.html

I have never heard of SkyKing RC Products so I don't know anything about them. The plane does look like a nifty little unit!

Did you know that it's quite easy to sharpen a plane's blade?

A very fine stone works good. I also made a cheap strop with some throwaway leather. Glued the rough side up on a block of wood. Rubbed some polishing compound into that "fuzzy" side and was good to go. Haven't bought another blade for any plane since. Plane blades are about the easiest blades to sharpen of any type of blade.

And haven't bought another Xacto blade either. Usually, all the Xactos need is some stropping. And of course, if their blades chip in use, I trash 'em.

If you can't get that one set up with blades, this one is a excellent replacement. It uses common double edge razor blades and works better than any plane I have found on balsa.

I own a David plane.

I sharpen the blades with a 2000 grit water stone. Works great.

If you want to improve the performance, try lapping the base to make it completely true. Makes a big difference.

Thanks for the help guys. I think that I'll buy some blades while they are still available and also try to sharpen the old one.

John
