Updated post with video's, do you think its tuned ok?
:::EDIT:::
Ok, so I went out and tuned it to what I thought was ok. If you haven't been following my posts below feel free to read them, or if you wouldn't mind you can't just watch the video's and tell me if you think it looks tuned ok. Not sure if you can even tell from the vids, its taken from a cell phone...and I'm new to nitro so I don't know if I video taped the right things for you to look at. Oh ya, and I didn't have anyone to video tape it for me, so I'm holding the controller in my left hand, and the cell phone in my right hand
My main question is this..ok so you can see its definitely emiiting the blue smoke at higher RPMS, so I think I have the HSN set correctly, however in the lower RPMS, or at idle it doesn't seem to emitt any blue smoke at all....but when I richen it up using the LSN it still doesn't emitt blue smoke at all, and it tends to just die.
Video showing low RPM's with no blue smoke...think its tuned ok?

high speed run...what do you think about the tuning on this one?
http://symanticliveupdate.net/Video-0017.mp4
Ok, so the last thing is for some reason it wasn't turning to the left. I am not sure why, as you can see in the video's (I hope) it turns just fine to the right, but when I try and turn it to the left the wheels kinda whobble a little like it wants to turn left but then it turns back straight again, then a little to the left, then maybe wobbles between left and straight (in the video if I'm not turning right, I've got the steering yanked ALL the way to the left, and as you can see it doesn't even look like I'm turning left)

And here is a video up close of the steering linking, seems to turn just fine when held up in the air. Also, since rebuilding the truck I installed the pro-line servo saver...could that be messing it up? Here is the link to what I purchased... http://hobbyoutlets.com/traxxas/proc6019.htm

ok...so I replaced all the screws with hex screws, didn't change any of the settings on the engine, but now it seems to use about twice as much fuel as before. Its also drawing a line in the pavement with my very expensive nitro fuel. Only things I've changed is adding a new gas tank that doesn't leak, and a better air filter for more air flow.
But now its using a LOT more nitrous, like before I'd drive it from my apt to the park and have 3/4 tank of gas left, now when I get to the park I have MAYBE 1/4 tank of gas left. And its not leaking at all, also the air filter tube seems to have fuel in it where I don't remember that happening before (maybe its just because I never looked before)....and the exhaust sprays out gas on the pavement, and when I gun it its a pretty noticeable amount...what do I change to get better fuel economy? I bought the TMaxx used, I know its an aftermarket engine. I can't quite make it out but on the side it either says "HC" or "IC" 3.5...if that helps. I was pretty careful as to not to move any of the set screws on the engine.
Thanks
Ryan

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
tuning you engine is a non stop requirement in nitro. learn to tune the engine and it will be better. everything affects the tune/fuel consumption: air temp, humidity, elevation etc...etc...

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
It's spitting fuel becuase it is rich. Lean the HSN out 1/8 of a turn at a time and wait about 30-40 seconds before you make another adjustment. Make sure there is still a good smoke trail though, you don't want to lean it too much or you will fry your engine.

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
as its pudding said, but after you adjust your HSN 1/12 or 1/8th of a run lean (counter clockwise) then feather the throatle for a second and then take it for a little spin as its stated about 30 or 40 seconds, bring it back to you, if you still seen a streak of fuel, adjust one more time and do the 30/40 seconds drive. dont just put, giver some gas get it going.. wot it from idle stop, just dont hold it wot for the full 30 seconds, just to burn out pooled up fuel in the case and see how it goes from idle to wot, it should be smooth but relatively quick build up with no spitting or sputtering..and have a visable blue trail of smoke. once you make an adjustment and see no more fuel coming from your pipe, bring the truck back to you and now give your HSN 1/12th of a turn rich (clockwise) and your hsn will be good.... once your HSN is set, you ll want to check and make any adjustment to our lsn, and after its set, set your idle screw for good idle and recheck your HSN one last time, sounds like alot but once you know whats what, this can happen in about 5 minutes.
check this for a better guide for tuning, it is very imformative.

of course if your engine is new ( has less than 10 tanks of fuel thru it) then you ll want to be sure to continue to follow breakin procedures as you could damage your engine life span and parts.

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
thanks alot guys, I got some other input from another forum too but I had completely forgot about wanting to have the blue smoke coming out of the exhaust since it is nitro, and not just gas. That said I think I leaned it out too much...and I also didn't drive it for 30-40 seconds before adjusting the needle again.
I'm glad you mentioned this because if I had continued doing what I was doing I'm sure I'd have fried the engine. Right now I'm just waiting for the batt in my rotostart to charge (Another three hours, lol) and I'm going to go back out and try it again. I'm really excited because I bought the truck used and ALL the screws were phillips, stripped, and loose. Also a couple of the wheels were wobbling noticeably so it wouldn't drive straight.
Now I've got all new hex screws all the way around, and replaced all the bearings on the truck, also replaced the steering assembly with one that cost me $50 and has bearings in it and alot more aluminum. I think this will help the HS645MG servo do its job like it was intended, and now I might be able to get it into second gear and drive straight without having to be in the grass!
Thanks again everyone for your support in my nitro fueled quest of greatness!!! haha =)

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
oh ya, one more Q
How do I know when its tuned right? I'm guessing once its spitting out a consistant level of light blue smoke and it increases in speed steadily from a dead stop? I don't have a temp gun yet I think thats the other thing I need to make sure its at 250degrees after going thru a full tank right?
Ry
:::EDIT:::
Ok I just read through that article about ten times...lol.
I went ahead and tightened the HSN all the way down, and then turned it CCW about three turns, and did the same thing with the LSN except only turned it about 1 turn out. Only question I really have now is how many turns out the idle needle should be turned out from being fully tightened for intially tuning the truck. I couldn't find that anywhere in the article.

you need a temp gauge. Should run between 220-260 F
you need a temp gauge. Should run between 220-260 F
1) I am broke
2) I hate spending money on things that wont make my truck faster or perform better
3) I can tune the engine according to the amount of ehaust, sound, and feel of the cooling head with my hand [8D]

I with you! I have a temp gun and I used it for awhile but, found I already knew if it was running right or not. I think a temp gun is good for a Newbie but, for those of us that have been doing this for more then I can remember it's a matter of seeing and feeling.

RE: what makes my engine burn more fuel and how do I stop it
I agree with you both...after reading some articles online they are saying if you tune the engine using a temp gun you'll likely blow the engine sooner or later due to the fact that the engine can be plus or minus 50 degrees.
However I think it might be a good idea just so I know its not running past 280 degrees maybe?
And did you guys possibly see the first post I updated in this thread where I posted some video's asking if it seemed to be tuned correctly?

RE: Updated post with video's, do you think its tuned ok?
Best to get someone with experience to look at your tuning issue and see if they can help you tune it. Hard to do without beinging there and listening to it (not on video) and looking at smoke. Your smoke looks good but maybe it has too much oil in it. Or maybe it could use more smoke.
As for your steering problem. I don't think it is the proline servo saver, unless the spring is too week. I think your servo may need replacing. My revo did that same thing with a 1 hour old servo, I sent the servo in for waranty and the gears were stripped in it.

If you know all this stuff by hearing and seeing...why are you asking us if it's right?
If you know all this stuff by hearing and seeing...why are you asking us if it's right?
I was asking basically if you can tell if its tuned right by the video I uploaded...also noted that I can understand if you're not able to tell if it is tuned ok by simply watching a video...which tadecker explained very nicely =) Mr. Mugen, if you have nothing nice to say or are just trying to make me look stupid then I understand if you don't respond to my posts.
:::EDIT:::
oh ya....and should there be blue smoke coming out when its idling or at low rpms? Doesn't seem to put much blue smoke out till almost hitting 2nd gear???
