I am having a tough time getting my throttle push rod down to my throttle servo. The engine is higher than where the servo is mounted.

If you don't have a straight shot you have the option of using flex cable or some type of flexible pushrod. Here's the setup I used in my Ultimate. it had to bend around a fuel tank & some other stuff.

It worked perfectly & there was no slack at all in the throttle. I unfortunately lost the plane due to a power switch failure on the second flight, so I can't give you a long term analysis.
I will be doing the exact same thing on the next one I'm building though.

I prefer to set up my throttle push rods with a bend somewhere between the throttle and the servo, normally just outside the firewall behind the engine. That way, on a crash, the rod is better able to absorb some of the energy of impact, and is less likely to cause the servo to strip. I also prefer to use lighter rods for the same reason. I don't like the cables because they have a tendency to bend too much at the wrong time.

I second the use of a cable...





My connection from the engine to the throttle servo was not straight so rigid rod would not cut it. This cable moves smoothly with very little friction to cause possible binding.

Mount a mini servo right on the firewall or on the motor mount with a small metal bracket. Then you have a 3" long pushrod and it's a straight shot to the carb. Not the easiest thing to mount up and fine tune--but it's the most trouble-free throttle setup you can use--once you get it set up and tuned right. I do it all the time.

BTW--that looks like the World Models 60 size Extra 330L.

I got the same plane with 90" wingspan and a Zenoah GT-80 twin.

I've attached a crude Paint image to give yo an idea. You can't do it like this, because of the pitts muffler. But, you can put the servo INSIDE the mount, right behind the engine backplate and run a rod up to the carb. Just make a little bracket from the left engine mount over to the right engine mount and screw the servo to it.

I've used the flex-cable on almost every plane I've built. Solder a Sullivan threaded end on the carb end and use a ball fitting. If you need an off set solder the length of cable you need and bend to fit. never had a problem because of the cable, Lot's of dumb thumbs. When you prepare to solder the cable run some 200 or 400 sand paper over the area lightly, and wipe it down real good with Rubbing alchol to make sure it's clean. KIDS DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME If you end up with to much solder on the cable heat it to the melting point and wipe it off with a sponge soaked with rubbing alchol. If the end of the cable becomes frayed while your working with it, wait until you have soldered the end and cut it off again. No problems

I like 1/32" music wire. It's lighter than cable and just as flexible. Just run it inside a snake like a cable and you're in business.

A "Z" bend of about a inch in music wire works fine just past the firewall on the engine side. Just don't use the skinny stuff. The throttle linkage does't require great strength, just no flexing.
