Brillelli 54/60
Hey guys,
Well there has been some hype around this engine and Brillelli in general. First let me explain the title... is there a 54cc? Well no.. well none besides the brand new one I have Everything is the same exact the head so I thought I would make this post so you can see some pics and hear some unbiased feedback.
Firstly let me explain that Brillelli was going to release a 54 and a 60.. but decided to only release the 60 because they were so close to eachother in size and really power it didnt make any sense to release both. I however needed a bit more power than the 46 I had so I was happy to get a 54cc and test it out since spec wise it's very close to the 60.
I just received it this morning and just finished mounting it but unfortunately a storm just came in and I cant run it till tomorrow.
Inital Impressions:
#1 First let me say this is one sexy engine (is there such a thing? )
#2 Everything was carefully wrapped
#3 Ignition, prop bolt, washer, mounting bolts, all came in seperate bags
#4 Manual for engine and ignition were nice and included solutions if you have problems adjusting the engine
#5 Nice vinyl decals are included

RE: Brillelli 54/60
Here are some pics of it mounted...
I will post rpms and more impressions tomorrow after I fly it.
So far this is one sweet engine!
Like I said there won't be another 54 available.. only the 60 but the price will be $575 complete and that includes a nice 2 yr warrenty.
The weight is 4.5# with everything needed to fly. You will notice that is only 3oz. heavier than a DA ready to fly.. and the 60 is really going to surprise you judging by the numbers I have seen. I have seen numbers for both the 54 and 60. I am not going to share them until I have my own numbers here to share as well.

RE: Brillelli 54/60
Looks like Scott's typical excellent fit, finish, quality.
I have his second production 60cc coming.... and it will be also a thing of beauty, no doubt.
Mainly, it will be a powerhouse for the weight.........about 2-4 oz heavier than a Taurus 52cc.... and lots lighter (8 oz) than the RCIGN G-62, with hopefully similar or better performance.
Can't wait for a report on your 54.... let us know prop/rpm/handling.......
Great pics, BTW.

Since ny G62s were mentioned here....Just so ya know, my last G62 lites (made yesterday) weigh 4 lbs without the muffler, cost $440 when made from $265 Ebay NIB G62s...Warranty ? Lifetime on the C&H ignition, whatever you want on the engine, there have been 0 problems in the last 18 years.....
You pays your money and takes your choice
It WILL surprise me if the numbers are better
I will put my customer service and satisfaction against anybody else in the world, DA included....

Yep..... nothin' wrong with your motor at all, Ralph. Nothing at all.... runs great, strong, lots lighter than stock, and your ignitions are very good.
And I *always* like trying different stuff.... you might call me a "Tester"..... after all, I actually have had - on this ONE BME 30% Yak. a BME 50, Taurus 52, RCIGN G-62, and next is the Brillelli 366GT.
I enjoy playing with different toys.... and they all have a beauty of their own.

Hopefully I'll have the pleasure of getting my grubby little hands at the sticks and putting it through it's paces Sunday ( me and Sin fly together often).

3 oz? My new DA 50 weighs 3lbs 12.5 oz, includes engine, muffler, 3" standoffs, 1800 mah ign pack, ignition and all the bolts to hold everything in place.

At any rate the 54 is the same weight as a Tarus 52 to give you an idea. Which is not that much heavier than a DA. I dont have a DA to compare infront of me.

All this competition between engine builders, plane builders, and suppliers makes it great for all of us. The average flier gets the best planes, and the best engines, at the best prices. I think I can speak for most of us average fliers when I say, "Thanks a lot, we know it's hard work and we appreciate it!" Keep doing what you're doing. We're all happy.

Well I guess that depends on the muffler and your scale. I dont have the link handy (lost in my mess of bookmarks ) but I saw a chart that was done with 2 scales and broke down many engines. It put the DA with switch battery, 3" standoffs and everything at 4.24 pounds.
At any rate the 54 is the same weight as a Tarus 52 to give you an idea. Which is not that much heavier than a DA. I dont have a DA to compare infront of me.

Aerobob-
I think your charts are very helpful to anyone wanting to make an informed choice on an engine. Most manufacturers just give a stripped down weight of thier engine to make it look as good as possable. It does none of us any good. What we all need to know is the true RTF weight in order to make a good decision on an engine. After all, we will not be flying a plane with an engine and no muffler, EI or a mounting setup. It is nice to have the weight info to find the best setup for a particular plane. Keep up the good work and than you for taking the time to do it.

RE: Brillelli 54/60
Alright boys well the facts are in and they look great
Where to begin is the question..
Starting the engine is a flip or 2 almost every single time. It took me a bit to figure out that this engine doesnt like to be as sloppy wet as most of the other engines I have played with. Once you get it down it starts like a charm.. several times I didnt even bother re-priming it after it had cooled off and sat while I was flying my other planes. Cold start walked over flipped it and off she went on the first flip.
Idle is extremely smooth and sounds great. The transition is nice and crisp as you would expect it to be and there was no burbling in the mid range at all. Just a smooth, great sounding transition.
Like I said earlier I didnt want to share any rpms or anything of that nature until I had played with it myself in a real environment.
Here is what I was told:
APC 22 x 8 @ 7450
Mejzlik 22 x 8 @ 6900
Zoar 22 x 8 @ 7050
I only had one prop to use.. but what did I get??
Mejzlik 22 x 8 @ 7100 continuosly
I dont know about you but for a brand new 54cc that's pretty good in my books Now remember this 54 is a one of a kind and Brillelli will only be offering a 60cc to everyone.. but I would like to share those numbers because I think their is a good chance they may be a bit low as well
APC 22 x 8 @ 7900
Mejzlik 22 x 10 @ 6800
Zoar 22 x 10 @ 7000
On a true scale... no BS thrust / hp calculator this 54 is pulling at 25 pounds thrust and the 60 at 28 pounds with less than 1/2 gallon.
Needless to say these are great little engines for sure. At $575 with muffler /standoffs, 4.5 pounds.RTF with battery (both weigh the same), a 2yr warranty, and the almost now famous Brillelli customer support, I dont see how anyone can go wrong. In fact after my day at the field I will already be ordering a 60 for my WH Yak54 At this weight and this kinda of power it will be amazing
Anyhow.. got side tracked haha. The test plane today was a Great Planes 1/4 Patty Wagstaff. My plane is completely stock and I have a seriously over done battery system with 3 2500 Nimh packs on board. 1 for ig. 2 for reciever.. I like to fly as much as possible in one day so I am way overkill. Needless to say my Patty weighs in at 16.5 pounds dry. I have a heavy tail wheel and 2 extra pieces of 1/4" ply with a ton of epoxy on the firewall because it has seen 1 rear carb and 2 side carb engines.
Unfortunately I only saw 2 good flights on the Patty because I umm kinda forgot to tighten the muffler and I lost it in flight
First flight went well although I was 4 stroking in the air and too rich.. but I decided to keep it in the air and have some fun. We had some big puffy clouds so I decided to test the vertical while rich and kept going till I just entered the bottom of a cloud. Hammer head down and back to idle spinning all the way down at idle. No gurgles.. hiccups and power to spare throughout the whole event. This thing just kept going... I even when back to half throttle let it slow down a bit and banged the throttle ingand she picked right back up nps.
I did 4 point rolls, long KEs both sides, a rolling circle and not one bog or anything. Needless to say I impressed.
Second flight was even better... got her setup properly and she purr'd through the air with ease. I did a very small bit of hover just to see pull out and it pulled out just fine. Before I could give my buddies the sticks for some serious 3D I lost the muffler and that was that. I have no doubt you could have brought it down on the deck and pulled out with ease. With any luck I will have some video this Sunday to share.
All I can say at this point is I am extremely happy with the engine and would highly recommend the 60. I cant wait till it breaks in!

I am very pleased to read good thing about this engine. I just got my Brillelli 366GT 60cc engine in yesterday and she looks just like your pictures. Brillelli sure knows how to make a pretty engine. I weighed mine on a digital scale and with everything except the battery pack it weigh's 4lbs 3oz. My Brillelli 366GT engine is going on a GSP 80" Cap-232 and it looks like the total weight will be 16lbs. I ask Scott about using a Xoar 23x8 prop and he said it should work fine and with a 23x8 Xoar prop I should be getting 30lbs of thrust. I like to keep my airspeed done a little and having the extra thrust is a plus. I'll post some pic's this weekend of the engine and plane.

What is the weight of the JTec Pitts muffler alone, please?
ORIGINAL: bhole74
You can add the BME 50 to the list as I weighed it and the DA with the same components, one right after the other. The BME came in at 4 lbs 4 ozs. I weighed each engine twice on both a digital scale and a dial scale, same reading on each scale. FWIW

Well I just ordered a PT prop right now.. should be here by mid week. I am extremely curious to see some numbers with a 22x8 PT on this engine.
I will be doing a lot more tests on the 54 tomorrow and hopefully get some video as well.
Going to be cloudy tomorrow... but really looking forward to doing some more tests and flying with this engine.

RE: Brillelli 54/60
Well it turned out to be a decent day.. although my friend forgot his cam so no video.
Got the 54 turning my Mej at 7200 rpm... she is def. sounding nice and hovering the Patty at 1/2 throttle. Also had a scale out today to learn that my Patty actually weighs 16 pounds 14. So this 54 is really pulling it around well. Time to strip out my 3 2500 packs and put some lighter batteries in her and lighter wheels, tail wheel and all that fun stuff. It still tracks extremely well and the 54 pulls her out of side nps.
Here are some pics from today...
