Frame bracing?
Greetings,
The DF V ti doesn't normally come with the diagonal frame bracing, but I was thinking of adding it since it can be done for a pretty reasonable price. The more I think about it though, the more I wonder if the bracing really helps that much with crash damage. I think the original purpose was maybe to reduce vibration for video use.
On one hand, the bracing seems like it would strengthen the structure considerably, but on the other, it seems to concentrate any crash loads on the point where the bracing attaches to the main rods near the motor mounts. Without the bracing, the main arms could flex to absorb the impact to some extent.
Bottom line questions-
If you were to have a crash where one motor hit the ground first, would you be more likely to have damage with, or without the frame bracing?
Does the bracing improve the flying qualities?
FWIW, I used to have an old Roswell Flyer, and those paper covered foam arms would snap if you just looked at wrong. Back then, I tried using heavy thread line diagonally between the arms as frame bracing of sorts. Best I recall, it just changed the place the arm broke

The frame bracing greatly improves the flying - well it does fly fine without it and is lighter so that matters a tiny bit. I find that the stiffer the frame the better for several reason: 1. when you do crash (land hard) you don't have to re-align the motors 2. The DF flys tighter when the frame is stiff and control is much easier. 3. they reduce the chance of snapping the cf arm if you crash hard, 4. less rotor slap when you turn tight.
I don't think anything is going to save your motor mounts in a crash other than some kind of enclosure (adding more weight). That is by far the most common piece I break in a crash. I have found that by using longer screws, extending well into the vertical shaft, saves a few mounts from the typical breaking point under the rotor gear. I also use tape to secure the frame bracing further so the DF is as rigid as possible. Still experimenting with different types, (most type eventually unwind).

Thanks for the comments. It sounds like the frame bracing is certainly worth having, and I just accepted a 2nd chance offer to buy one on Ebay, so I guess I've got one now.
As for getting them to throw it in at no cost, I've been working on them, don't worry

I would highly recommend using frame bracing. They were designed to prevent the motors from rotating on the arms. So they will reduce the pitch adjustments of the rotors to next to never. The rods will also pop out of the elbows and absorb more shock than you think.
I have had a few hard landings where the bracing saved me some major damage and repair time. But nothing could have saved the DF from the damage caused from falls from the heights in the link below. [X(] [:'(]

Hi thanks for the advice, did the df become rebuilt or was it a bin job?
do you have pic of exactly what frame bracing is? i assumed it was the 4 long carbon sharfts that turn the df into a square, i also thought the vti pro had these

Correct, the frame bracing are the thin rods and 90 degree attachments (making the DF look like a flying square). The Pro comes with these - even after reading the comparison chart several times I find it hard to distiquish the difference in models.
