what a difference a prop makes - DA50
I have been using amsoil 100:1 on my da50 and its seen about 6 gallons until now. Up until yesterday all I had ever used was Menz 22x8 props and was getting about 6900 rpms tops. Now I have changed to a mejzlik 22x8...and rpms have jumped to 7400.... [8D]
Am I seeing things or are CF props like this only? Im amazed at the power now. I get totally unlimited verticals on my 16lbs 27% Colombo extra.

The Menz loads the engine more than Mejzlik. Depending on the engine power curve, you may get more or less thrust when switching.
22x8 at ~7000 rpm is not very impressive. Are you choking your engine with a small muffler?

Well prop does a lot of things... it effects both noise and power.
The Mej is a great prop and will pull that around great. You can also try a PT or a Xoar.

RE: what a difference a prop makes - DA50
pe reivers, did you have your Milk money taken from you as a child when you went to school?
Ragz, In my opinion, the Mezjlik 23 X 8 is the best all-around prop for the DA-50. It should put you in the 6800-6900 RPM range, provides good down-line braking and will pull a 16lb Plane vertical very nicely. Sea level, temprature, etc. will all effect the RPM's.
Did you notice the Mezjlik prop to be a little quiter?

Two things happend with your change of prop:
1) The Mejzlik 22x8 has slightly smaller paddles than the Menz 22x8 , that's why it turns 500 more static peak RPM's than the Menz 22x8.
2) You Mejzlik is a more efficient prop since the pitch does not flatten out at higher RPM's, so you get a about pound more of thrust.
Go with the Mejzlik 23x8 and it will be perfect. 7400 might be a little noisy. DA says that the perfect prop for a broken in DA50 is a Mejzlik 23x8. As stated the Xoar is good too (23x8).

I know this is about props, but if you read the many discussions on oil and oil mixes, you will find that you will likely get more power and RPM with more oil content, as well.

if he's that much amazed (and with other numbers I have seen) I'm betting his Menz is a wood prop, so with that yes carbon props can be like that, CF props are stiffer, stiffer props are easer to spin and flex less..

Joe, You are absolutely right about the noisy bit. Its LOUD alright. I will try out the mej 23x8 as well as the menz 23x8 wooden. I am beggining to 3d a bit on this airplane and I believe wooden props have better and faster transition...so trying out a 23x8 menz wooden will be a good idea as well.
thanks for the advice.

This is interesting. I switched to 100:1 only for more power...i dont care much about the little mess a 32:1 mix would leave on the plane. However, if this theory is true going to say a 50:1 mix might be a good idea as well? Any opinions?

Here is one of the most recent debates. You will find a lot of interesting information here.

I was thinking the Xoar is wood and the PT is CF....is it reasonable to compare them in the same breath?

RE: what a difference a prop makes - DA50
My experience with a DA50, power is pretty much the same with different oil mixes.... I've done 80:1, 100:1, 50:1, 40:1, 32:1... no real change in power (taching the engine)... Playing with exhaust is the quickest away to gain more rpms....
I'm running 40:1 Klontz, bisson wrap around pitts, and a MSC 22x8 prop... I tach 6900 on the ground... but this prop pulls much better than a CF 23x8 (bolly)... I was getting 7200 on the ground with it... Just because the engine tachs higher doesn't mean it will pull better out of a hover...

Actually I have a 23x8 Xoar all set to go but never bolted it on. So I haven't tried any yet.

RE: what a difference a prop makes - DA50
For 3D flying I prefer a 22x8 for its snappy throttle response. I had a Mejzlik 23x8, it was quiet but that was about it. All the 22x8 woodies I've tried pulled as good or better and throttled better than the 23x8 Mejzlik.
