Vat & Duty on my own goods ?
Well here's a new one on me. I recently sent my blown ECU to JetCat USA for repair. They replaced the Power board & charged me $125. Excellent, no problem, Thank you Guys. They sent it back with UPS, It left Van Nuys CA, at 8.30pm on the 10th Jan & was in East Midlands Airport at 11pm on the 12th Jan, via Kentucky & Koln, because i had paid express shipping, again excellent service. THEN, UPS brokerage, on behalf of UK Customs & Excise got their greedy little fingers involved. I had to prove i was a private individual & this was my own property, by e-mail to them. OK, they delivered it on the Monday while i was out at work, & would not leave it with a neighbour because there was £25 to pay ! What ? £25 to pay? Why ? They had charged me £12.50 vat, £1.50 duty, & £11 for their service of taking money off me. THIS IS ON MY OWN PROPERTY. It was explained by a very nice young lady, that this is the case when you send goods to be repaired in the USA. It was vat, & duty on the SERVICE that had been provided in America. I'd better stop there because i can feel the blood pressure & expletive level rising rapidly. Bloody cheeky buggers ! Ray.

That's how it works. If you'd had a repair done in Europe you would have had to pay VAT, so when the ECU came back into the UK they put the VAT on - although by my calculation, on $125 it should have been nearer 11 GBP rather than 12.50.
I agree with you about the level of charges from UPS though. 11 GBP seems a lot for merely entering a few figures into a computer, especially when the item was of comparatively low value. Rather like the banks who charge 30 GBP to send you a letter about your overdraft even though it's computer generated and only cost them a few pence!

That's right.
I'm with you all the way that this is just another way to rip off people. But thats how it works.....sink the island and come to the mainland, where there's no VAT on EU goods. By the way, take down switzerland as well....they make it difficult to get turbine wheel castings across the border :-)
Best regards
Hank

Hi Sarah, then i'm dreading my Behotec J66 coming back from Germany, I just paid £455 to have the crash damage repaired. On an engine that i bought second hand too ! Born free ! Taxed to death ! He he. Ray. Er, i'm not having too much luck with the turbines at the moment, I hope it improves in 2007. Ray

if you supply the original invoice , and jetcat usa should send also a invoice with 0 labour costs and declare "return repair" there are NO cost
no matter what ups says.
i did this a lot of times with my own customers and it will work.

"come to the mainland, where there's no VAT on EU goods"
???
I have to add 17.5% VAT (UK rate) to all items sold throughout the European Union, and I am sure that applies in reverse - for example an item purchased from the Netherlands by an Englishman would have to include the 19% NL VAT. The only time this does not apply is when goods are sent to a VAT-registered trader in another EU country, and then I can send without VAT but have to supply details of the amount and the recipient to the Government.

RE: Vat & Duty on my own goods ?
Sara, i was talking about sending around repaired turbines and such, as was the case with Ray. Within the EU there is no charge on customs and such, an ECU that was repaired in Germany can be sent to the netherlands or italy without duty charges. You can also simply drive across the border without customs and passports and all that timeconsuming bull....and nobody will really care wether or not you have a turbine that was repaired in your trunk....
Concerning sales within these countries: i don't know, i'm no expert....since i don't own a company or such :-). I just know that when buying stuff within euro country i never have any hassle with customs :-)
Best regards
Hank

Hank,
You are right, there are no customs problems, we don't have to put customs forms on anything for the EU and it is quick and simple. But one of the reasons for the simplicity is that VAT is applied throughout Europe, so tax is paid wherever you are. The government will always get the money....

RE: Vat & Duty on my own goods ?
I had a nasty VAT problem 2 years ago, and I’m in the US !! I had ordered a giant ¼ scale heli from a manufacturer in Austria. Since the mfg had only mechanics sets set up for the Jafadowski turbines, I ended up mailing him my JetCat ph4t so as to make a custom set of mechanics around it … I insured the engine for $4000 and indicated in the shipping papers it was going in for review, and return, with no modifications to the engine I was sending, and would be coming back to me .. Well, customs in Austria tried charging the recipient there like $900 in VAT !! it took over 4 MONTHS to get this resolved ! you can not even begin to imagine how difficult it can be dealing with a customs agency in another country !, especially where everyone seemed to be arrogant with their head up their *** !! … I ended up having to provide proofs of purchase, and they even wanted personal tax info to see if I had not history of doing this as a business … ( I never sent that to them .. ) … so finally it gets to the recipient in Austria, no vat.. ( oh, did I mention that they had lost it twice while in customs ?? ) ..so I thought the ordeal was over …. Well, not really … when the put it through customs in Austria, the coded it as “arms propellant “ , which I had no idea about … so now a fem more months later , and the heli, mechanics, and engine are ready to go back to me in a big heavy crate … So I’m at EWR at Lufthansa cargo, and am going through customs picking this thing up, except for one problem, they are refusing to release the crate to me without authorization for me to receive an “arms propellant “ … all the idiots in the warehouse are flipping out and treating the crate as if it has a missile warhead loaded in it … security is swarming the damn place, and I’m being questioned by everyone … I end up showing them all the paperwork, etc, and they allow me to open the crate to show them this is in fact a “TOY†helicopter … after doing this, they all laugh the panic off, and agree to release it to me , … one problem left .. now they want me to just sign the form to indicate I picked it up … oh no I don’t !! im not in any way signing a paper that indicates I was the recipient of “arms propellants†!! 3 hours later the paperwork was cleared out by a US customs official, and I was finally on my way back home ( in what was now turning into a nasty snow storm ) ……

RE: Vat & Duty on my own goods ?
The "magic words" when sending items from the US to the UK for repair are "Temporary Import Only - item for repair". This needs to go on all paperwork and also the side of the box. UPS/DHL/FEDEX etc all have forms which are faxed to the importer and I fill in details of what it is and how long it will be in the UK, and after that we don't usually have any problems and there is no VAT required. I would assume that this system operates elsewhere in Europe, since all customs procedures in the EU are likely to be under similar regulations.
That info isn't much use to you now, Wojtek - sorry! - but may help others in future.

RE: Vat & Duty on my own goods ?
What i'm saying is that UPS charged me VAT & Duty on the SERVICE that was provided in the USA, not the goods themselves.
DCM, "Bloody cheeky Buggers" is an old Anglo Saxon expression, meaning " I think The customs & excise are taking a liberty with us".
Sparan Muscle, Yes youre right, i should have gone to Speck.......... No, Wren.
CJ2006, I didn't know that M&R provided a repair service, everyone i asked, said that JetCat Germany would not repair it, & i should buy a new one, & a VERY large retailer said, " Anyone who plugs his battery in the wrong way round, deserves all he gets". Thanks Mate, My trade is going elswhere in future. Cheers for now. Thanks for all the comments & info..Ray

Does VAT not apply to services normally?
I'm entertained by all the europeans who love their socialist programs but spend a lot of energy trying to dodge the required taxes to support it all!

It's called "new labour" now, and its about as caring towards the masses as stalin was.
I'd happily talk politics over a beer but it's time for me to shut up now, otherwise some TWAT team will wake me up at 5 am.
